Course Reflection
Throughout the course I have had several writing assignments that have exposed me to the
different types of writing styles such as visual analysis, reflective essay, research paper, rhetorical
analysis, and an annotated bibliography. I learned how to take information from a source and evaluate it
critically. During the course for every essay we wrote we would have someone peer review it before the
final draft was submitted. I learned how to analyze my work as well as my fellow classmates. All of the
skills I learned from the assignments this course have been building blocks on to my past knowledge. I
learned how to identify them in my writing 0990 class and in English 1010 I have learned how to
effectively compose them.
All of the assignments given throughout the course have made me see things from a new
perspective. Instead of looking at something like it is, I have been able to analyze it and come up with my
own conclusion. An example of this is when I am driving by and see a billboard advertisement. I am able
to analyze it, see the different viewpoints and then come up with my own conclusion. Completing all of
the assignments has been a challenge as some point during this semester. It is hard to juggle school, work,
and sports. I have been called into work right after school several times which has taught me to manage
my time more efficiently. I learned to set a specific time every day to complete my homework.
At the beginning of the semester it was a challenge to start writing. As soon as I got into the
routine of composing essays I started to get a system that has been effective. The first step would be to

create an outline, second a rough draft, third someone review it, fourth revise from the feedback given,
fifth have someone review it, sixth revise then submit. This process took me awhile to get down but once
I did writing became a little easier and faster. I learned that it takes me awhile to come up with the initial
idea for a paper but once I get the ideas flowing it becomes easier. I am a very slow writer and because of
that I have dedicated two extra hours to my regular study time to complete any writing assignments.
This project has taught me to recognize Aristotles three appeals (Ethos, Kairos, Logos, and
Pathos) in any paper. Recognizing the three appeals has been very beneficial in determining a reliable
source. I have learned how to organize, draft, and revise a paper. I have been able to recognize these key
components to provide valuable feedback. I learned a great deal about citing sources from doing the IEP
(issue exploration research paper). I am now aware of the correct format, content and overall presentation
of the paper.
