Montages throughout 1915 to modern day have changed a lot.
Montages from 1915 were called
Soviet montages and they were used to manipulate audiences to make them believe something that wasnt true. An example of this is D.W Griffiths made a short film called Birth of a Nation it is about a women and a black man, from the editing the scenes together to create the montage it was made out that the black man was trying to harm the women with the intentions to rape her. The scenes edited together from shot to shot portray a false storyline, or otherwise known for the purpose of propaganda. This so called propaganda scared the nation, as it seemed so believeable at the time as editing skills were so poor in 1915, audiences believed it was real. D.W Griffiths film was the first film to have an actual storyline and the main focus of the storyline was to manipulate the audience which he did, as black people were seen as lower class. From 1915 the progression of montages, we looked at Alfred Hitchcock. He developed montages from manipulating audiences to showing time passing. One of his most popular movies was Psycho, and it showed a montage of the girl getting killed. However you never see the girl getting stabbed, it just implies shes getting stabbed as you see the knife and then the camera switches to the girl screaming. Editing in these days werent at the best, but the audience believed what they saw. But today in modern montages, they are normally used to show someone learning a skill or telling a story about their life. Modern montages are just scenes edited together to show time passing or character development. For my first example, the hot fuzz video clip it begins with a montage of the main character telling you about his life so far and what he has learnt. Modern montages are now a lot better quality and more believable than the montages in films that you saw in 1915.
