Lesson Title: Finding area of shapes
Time: 45 minute class period
Standards Addressed: G.A.1 Solve real-world and mathematical
problems involving area, surface area, and volume.
Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and
polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and
other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and
mathematical problems.
Objective: Students will determine the area of a shape, students will master
area of shapes that are not four sided.
Required Materials: Graph paper, pencil, worksheet, power point, Smart
Board.

Anticipatory Set: I would like four students to volunteer to come up to the white board.
(Students volunteer and come up to the board). I would like each of you to draw a
rectangle to the best of your ability and make up a length and a width, and try not to do
the same as the others that are up at the board. (They all make up different rectangles
with lengths and widths)
Now I need four different students to come up to the board and stand in front of one
rectangle with the lengths and widths (Four new students come up to the board). Each of
you have to find the area of the rectangle that you are assigned to. Write the answer on
the board and circle the answer. (I will then check the accuracy of the answers) Now I
need ONE student that has not been up to the board to volunteer. (Students approaches
board) Please add the circled answers of the four rectangle areas.
(Student takes a seat) On the white board I rewrite the rectangles and put them together as
one whole shape, using different colors for each outline of the rectangles. Ask the class
what is the area of the whole shape now that I have taken the rectangles and put them
together as one shape. (Select a student with their hand raised) Correct! Now lets see if
we can put a shape together without knowing the individual parts first.
Instruction: Area- the area of a rectangle is length X width. (Slide 2)
Draw four differently shaped rectangles making up one whole shape. (Slide 3)

Draw lines to help find the different rectangles to find the area of each rectangle inside
the shape and then add to find the whole area (Slide 3)
Continue through the examples on slide 4
Independent Practice: Give each student the worksheet that is assigned (attached
worksheet) with shapes with a space to find the area (and perimeter for extra credit).
Circle the classroom to be sure that each student is clearly understanding the steps to take
in finding the area of the shapes. Students are allowed to work with one partner in the last
5 minutes of the allotted time. To accurately understand the objective students must get
80% of the answers correct.
Closure: Today we have learned how to find the area of shapes that are not always
perfect four sided shapes. Tomorrow we will learn how to find the volume of shapes.
Everyone please pass in their worksheets and get lined up for lunch!
