Classroom Environment
For the purposes of this assignment, I will be working with a group of 24 students in my
classroom. I will arrange the desks in groups of three to allow for greater simplicity when
dividing students into groups for discussions, peer editing, reflections, etc. There will be two
columns with four rows each towards the center of the room. Around the outsides of the room, I
would like to have more comfortable seating, such as papasan chairs, couches, or bean bags, for
silent reading time. I would like to have my desk at the front of the room in the corner at an angle
with any filing cabinets I need in the extra corner space. In the front and center of the room I
would like to have a small podium and a stool from which I can conduct some of my lessons. I
plan on having a classroom library, which could be housed along the outside walls with the
additional seating. On the walls, I will hang a variety of educational based inspirational quotes
and English based quotes (most likely from the pieces we will be covering in my respective
classes). I will also have a space designated either on the wall or on the white/chalk board where
I can post helpful hints that we stumble upon throughout the duration of the class to encourage
retention from students. My goal with this classroom is to create an atmosphere where students
can really dig in to the information being presented in a comfortable and inviting classroom.
Discipline Model(s)
My discipline in the classroom will hopefully be able to be pretty lax since I am not the
enforcer type of personality, nor do I want to be a firm punisher with rash consequences. I
hope to encourage students positive behavior by demonstrating withitness and making sure that
my students are aware that I know what is going on in my classroom. If problems do arise, my
biggest aim will be to make sure that the discipline that I administer (if necessary) is consist in

every case. I will strive to not show favoritism or allow situations to become subject to
circumstance. I also plan on focusing more on the implementation of nonverbal communication
when students are misbehaving or demonstrating inappropriate behavior rather than verbal
communication. As we have discussed in class many times, the best type of disciple is that which
goes unnoticed by the rest of the class. Although in my perfect, fantasy world, I will never have
students who misbehave or require discipline or consequences, I am aware that these things are
inevitable, no matter what age of students a teacher is dealing with. I plan to start off the year
trying to come off a little bit more intimidating or serious with my discipline than I would
normally be comfortable with. Although I do not want to use scare tactics to make sure my
students are displaying proper behavior, it would be easier to relax the discipline model of my
classroom once my classes and I got into a routine than it would be to try to make the discipline
model more strict after it got off to a laid back start.
Classroom Expectations
The majority of my classroom expectations are going to revolve around one major concept
respect. I plan on having some sort of purpose or promise statement that all students will read
and agree to at the beginning of each school year that makes sure that everybody is one the same
page with what exactly is included in being respectful. In a classroom where a lot of the
material is original work from the students, it is important that all students are willing to share
their work and not have to be fearful of rude or hurtful comments from their peers. A lot of what
is embodied in the English curriculum is grammar and format and objective concepts such as
those with concrete answers. However, a lot of that curriculum is also based around very
subjective responses and are not necessarily right or wrong. In order for my students to be able to
learn the material I will be presenting to them, they need to be uninhibited in their application

and production of the concepts. The purpose would be something along these lines: That
everyone who steps into the classroom does so with the willingness to listen to all ideas
presented. That each student is entitled to his or her own personal beliefs, ideals, and
interpretations. That all criticism be constructive. That any and all discrepancies or conflict be
handled in a mature fashion. That each student is allowed equal time to present ideas without
interruption. That each student is treated with kindness and respect at all times.
