Overall Goal of Lesson:


To recognize and differentiate the event of El Descubrimiento de Amrica from the Arriving of The
Mayflower.

Instructional Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will:
1. Identify the day in which this event is celebrated.
2. Comprehend vocabulary.
3. Apply his/her knowledge by summarizing the information given.
4. Develop phrases.

Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) & ELPS:


114.22. Levels I and II - Novice Progress Checkpoint (a) General requirements.
(1) Levels I and II - Novice progress checkpoint can be offered in elementary, middle, or high school.
At the high school level, students are awarded one unit of credit per level for successful completion of
the level.
(2) Using age-appropriate activities, students develop the ability to perform the tasks of the novice
language learner. The novice language learner, when dealing with familiar topics, should:
(A) understand short utterances when listening and respond orally with learned material;

(c) Knowledge and skills.


(1) Communication. The student communicates in a language other than English using the skills of
listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The student is expected to:
(A) engage in oral and written exchanges of learned material to socialize and to provide and obtain
information.

What? Watching a short explanatory video in Spanish and reading the story in both languages,
Spanish and English, for better comprehension.
How? Whole class and in groups of two.

Modifications/ELL Strategies:
Translation made in the same document using words for beginner students.

Anticipatory Activity for Lesson:


Bell work Open-ended questions
Why people use to leave its birthplace for traveling to unknown ones?
How people benefits of traveling and knowing from and about different cultures?

Teacher Input/Lesson Activity:


Teacher will hand a Bell Ringer form to the students so they respond to the questions on it. Later,
students will share their responses with the class.
Students will be exposed to the lesson vocabulary in order of familiarizing with the lesson content.
Teacher will say the words in Spanish and students will repeat them in Spanish too.
Teacher will explain about the Discovering of America.

Teacher will show a video and hand out a writing information to the students so they may follow and
understand the story from the video.

Modeling:
Teacher will model Spanish reading to students.

Guided Practice:
Students then, will read the story in Spanish. Teacher will monitor students work and development.

Independent Practice:
Using a Venn Diagram, students will compare both European arrivals (Spaniard and British). They will
find similarities/differences on both of them. This activity will be discussed among the group.

Lesson Closure:
Students will show their comprehending by writing a summary about the Discovering of America.

Reflection:
Learning a new language implies being aware of other cultures and their celebrations. Knowing about
different cultures and backgrounds could be enjoyable as well as beneficial since this knowledge
would help our personal and professional development/growth.
