After each session (class or tutorials), write in your journal a reflection that addresses the

following questions:

What knowledge, skills and/or dispositions are needed to help a student learn? What
are you learning about what it means to be a teacher?
Refer to CCQs, classroom management, instructions and use of whiteboard.
Based on the implementation of your plan or your interactions with the students, what
do you think you need to improve, do differently or maintain for the next session?

It was my turn. Despite of the nervousness and my inexperienced about teaching I think that
I managed the class very well. I had practiced everything before and also I had looked for the
most suitable material for my students in order to engage them to learn. In addition to this, I
did some changes suggested by my supervisor who had checked my lesson plan before.
Therefore, the key was to be prepared. Also, I showed self-confidence in front of students
what allowed me to feel sure of what I had to do and say. I made CCQs in order to check
understanding but students were not able to answer them because as students of general
English they do not have contact with the language outside the classroom and it is difficult
for them to understand some words. That is way I used the whiteboard in order to explain
some words and also structures. I think that it allowed them to get an idea of what I was
teaching them. It was the same problem at the moment of giving instructions. I realized that
students did not understand long instructions and the next opportunity I had to work on
that.
I learnt that to be prepared is the key to manage a class. On the other hand, I realized the
importance of the language that as a teacher should use because some students do not
understand questions neither instructions. For this, I must learn how to explain in simply
words and use body language in order to teach properly.

During the class my classmate was friendly and kind. It allowed her to create a good
environment to teach. She also showed confidence because she knew everything what she
had to say and do. However, one of the things that she never made was CCQs. In this line,
she did not know if students had understood or not. Another aspect to take into account
was instructions. Due to the lack of experience the instructions were too long. On the other
hand, she mixed activities (receptive and productive) it called my attention because I
realized that every class should have different kind of activities in order to improve the four
skills.
I learnt that it is really important to create a nice atmosphere and a good relationship with
students in order to gain their confidence. I strongly believe that it is the only way to teach
properly. In this way, students are not going to be afraid of making questions or making
mistakes. Regarding CCQs, I think that they are really important because students with low
level of English are not able to understand some words and this is the way to check it.
Another aspect is instructions. This is one of the most difficult parts because we are not
experts and sometimes she gave instructions and they were extremely long. As a result
students got confused when listening to them. I learnt from this that we have to use simply
vocabulary; so that, students can understand what the teacher wants to say.

It was my turn again. I was nervous because I arrived late. Despite this, I could face this
situation. I added receptive (listening) and productive (writing) activities because I had
realized the importance of having different kinds of activities in order to practice skills. And
also, I prepared a game for students in order to make them interact among them. From my
point of view, the collaborative work allowed students to get a better understanding of the
content. I used the whiteboard to explain grammar structures and correct grammar
mistakes. I made CCQs but they still did not understand; therefore, I had to repeat CCQs
three times more or less in order to make them clear. My instructions were too long and
students got confused at the moment of giving them; furthermore, I had to use gestures.
I learnt that I cannot arrive late because it is very stressful. Also, I realized that I have to
work a little bit more on CCQs and the way I give instructions. Even though I used body
language and repetitions students were not able to understand at first time. However, I
strongly believe that I can improve these aspects through time because it implies a lot of
training. To be a good teacher is not easy. You need to take many details into account. Now I
can notice some aspects that before teaching I did not.

It was Claudias turn. This time she was very energetic and also emphatic the same as her
first tutorial. As a result, she engaged students to learn. Her class was well prepared and she
showed self-confidence in front of students. However, once again she did not make CCQs in
order to check understanding. Regarding instructions they were a little bit shorter than
before, but they were still given with vocabulary that students did not understand. Her
activities were mainly pictures without structures; therefore, it made students speak. She
used the whiteboard to explain structures and used semicircle (sitting arrangement) at the
beginning, it was a good idea because in that way she could see every student and at the
same time she had all attention that she needed to teach. On the other hand, the activities
implemented by my classmate took short time and the class finished earlier.
I learnt that I can use different sitting arrangements depending on the task or the purpose of
the lesson. The semicircle is one of the most suitable because in that way I can call students
attention and also it ensures a clear visibility for every student. Another aspect that I will
have to keep in mind is the fact that teachers need to be prepared and to have a plan B, the
magic box. Teachers need to appreciate the moment when students are in class because
outside they do not speak the language. Furthermore, teachers need to take advantage of
every minute. That is why the magic box should be present in every class in order to tackle
unforeseen events.
