ESOMEPRAZOLE (Nexium)
Classifications: Proton-Pump Inhibitors, Antiulcer Agents
Indications: GERD/Erosive Esophagitis
Mechanism of Action: Attaches to parietal cells to block the transport (final step) of Hydrogen into the
gastric lumen.
Therapeutic Effects: Decreased amount of gastric acids.
Contraindications: If the client is with known hypersensitivity to proton pump inhibitors
> Use cautiously with hepatic dysfunction, pregnancy and lactation
Side Effects: Abdominal pain, dry mouth, diarrhea
Interactions: Increased serum levels and potential increase in toxicity of benzodiazepines and phenytoin
when taken concurrently.
> May interfere with absorption of drugs dependent upon presence of acidic environment (e.g.
ketoconazole, iron salts, digoxin)
Nursing Responsibilities:
>Ask client frequently if he/she is experiencing pain around the abdomen or epigastric area.
