1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus
did the teacher include in the lesson today?
The focus for the lesson today was comprehension. The teacher actually had me teaching a small
group today. I was working with the system 44 kids. The activities that we did that related to the
lesson were; vocab, word groups. For the vocab we talked about how many syllables are in the
words, and what the definition was, and using the word in a sentence. For the word groups we just
talked about which words were verbs or nouns or adjectives.
2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn?
Something that went well with the lesson was that one of my kiddos was very excited to read, he
had already read part of the text before, so he had some insight into the story line and was excited
to explain information to his peer and to me. The students learned a couple new vocabulary words.
They practiced their fluency which is important. I had them relate the text to their life and asked if
they had any stories about times when you felt jealousy, (which was one of the vocab words) I also
had the kids make predictions about how the book would end.

3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something
from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness,
phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading)
My fears about my system 44 students were sadly confirmed. They really struggle with nearly every
single word. The little boy that I was working with was better than the girl. He was able to recognize
most of the sight words, but hand to sound out a few. The girl that I was working with couldnt even
recognize her sight words. She had to sound out every sound, which made reading the book
miserable.

4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment.
How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation.
Whenever the little boy that I was working with told me about a personal story that had to do with the
text, out of nowhere. I didnt prompt him or anything. I could tell then that he was actually
understanding and processing the words. I was so proud of him for making text to self connections. To

help facilitate the experience I was sure to mention out loud the he did a great job connecting the story
to his real life. When we were done reading I was sure to tell his teach (in front of him) that he was
doing a great job in comprehension today.
