Reflection
One way that I could incorporate these resources into the classroom instruction is by
planning some lessons and homework assignments around them. For example if I want students
to complete a nature walk I can suggest to students that rather than completing the walk in their
backyard, they can go to their nearest public park. In order for students and parents to have
access to this information I would provide a map of the parks nearest to them to make these
resources accessible to them. If a classroom activity required students to access multiple books to
for reading I would encourage families to venture out the local library instead of using the
classroom, or home books. Another way of incorporating these resources into the classroom
would be by inviting members from these organizations to come into the classroom especially if
they offered programs that are intended for students. After they have presented to the class
families will be encouraged to continue to use their services.
Many parents who are not familiar with the English language, or simply dont have the
ability to search for these community resources might never have the chance to use them. I feel
that it is my responsibility as a teacher to help parents become aware of the assets within their
community. I could do this by having a section in my newsletter that is dedicated exclusively to
resources within the community. I can also help parents search and identify resources that could
be useful to them. A lot of the resources that I found were either free or contingent on a familys
economic status so these resources really are for anyone.
This assignment has helped me see how I can use the resources that are around a childs
community, and integrate them into their classroom environment. Students are very aware of
their communities since they spend so much time in them. When community resources are used
within the classroom students will feel as though they matter, and they are valued. This activity

has also made me aware of many services that were available in the Drexel Heights area. Even
though I am very familiar with this area, and I didnt know many of the services that were
available, especially in such a close proximity to their home.
