Measurement

Focus: Problem Solving with Area, Perimeter, Volume, and Surface Area

6.10 The student will

a. define (pi) as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter;

b. solve practical problems involving circumference and area of a circle,
given the diameter or radius;
c. solve practical problems involving area and perimeter; and
d. describe and determine the volume and surface area of a rectangular
prism

The Coordinate Plane The Treasure Hunt

Suitability: Grades 5-8

In this video, our protagonist finds a

treasure map laid out as a
coordinate plane. To get to the
treasure, he needs to use what he
knows about coordinate plane. He
reviews the concepts of x-axis, yaxis, origin and ordered pairs as he
tries to find his treasure.

Lose Yourself (in the digits)

Suitability: 7

Readability: 9.6

Its called Lose Yourself (In The Digits), and its

about the agony and thrill of getting up on
stage and trying, under extreme pressure, to
recite the digits of pi. Its a close parody of the
well-known Eminem hit, Lose Yourself, which
is about, well, the agony and thrill of getting up
on stage and trying, under extreme pressure, to
rap.

Circles: Circumference & Area "All You Need Is

Pi and the Radius"

Suitability: Grades 5-8

Listen to this song to learn the formulas for

circumference and area of circles. The
catchy hook helps students remember that
the formula for circumference is "2 pi r"
and the formula for area is "pi r squared."
The song teaches terms like pi, radius and
diameter as it walks students through the
process of calculating the circumference
and area of example circles.

Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi

Suitability: Grade 2-7, Ages 8-12

Readability: 4.2

Sir Cumference, Lady Di of Ameter, and

Radius are back in their second Math
Adventure! This time, a potion has
changed Sir Cumference into a firebreathing dragon. Can Radius change him
back? Join Radius on his quest through the
castle to solve a riddle that will reveal the
cure. It lies in discovering the magic
number that is the same for all circles.

The Librarian Who Measured the Earth

Suitability: Grades 2-6, Ages 9-12

Readability: 5.7

A colorfully illustrated biography of the

Greek philosopher and scientist
Eratosthenes, who compiled the first
geography book and accurately measured
the globe's circumference. Describes the
life and work of Eratosthenes, the Greek
geographer and astronomer who
accurately measured the circumference of
the Earth.
(The Librarian Who Measured the Earth)

Homeless Pi

Suitability: 6

Readability: 3.7

Written by Calvin Smith this is a short story

that can be used to as interaction in your
classroom. Use the story to draw and
outline the characters and their interaction
with pi on the chalkboard. The activity
could be used as an introduction to a
creative writing project, to encourage
students to make short stories, poems, or
songs utilizing pi.

Sir Cumference and the First Round Table

Suitability: Grade 1-7, Ages 9-12

Readability: 4.8

In the first book in the series, King Arthur

and his knights must use circumference,
diameter, and radius to come up with a
better table for their meetings. Their
existing rectangular table is too long,
requiring them to shout to be heard! Paired
with engaging illustration, this is
memorable way to introduce these
geometry concepts.

Prisms: Area & Volume Trapped in a Prism

Suitability: Grades 5-8

This song uses the story of a man unjustly

imprisoned to teach students how to
calculate the area and volume of a prism.
The volume is the area of the base times
the height, or length times width times
height. The surface area is the total area of
all of the faces, or 2(lw + lh + wh). The song
explains the math behind these formulas
and gives students a catchy way to
remember them.
(Prisms: Area and Volume)

Surface Area Nets of Polyhedra

Suitability: 7.6

Readability: 7.6

This video can be used as a supplement to

show polyhedrons draw out in a threedimensional manner. Although the video is
advanced it can be used as a great visual
after teaching surface area. The video
applies color coding to help explain the
idea of a three-dimensional object.

Volume of a Rectangular Prism

Suitability: 7.6

Readability: 7.7

This is a great video to use as a review

before a test or to follow up a lesson. The
colors allow for a great visual and
understanding to help students with a
visual learning style. The video starts with
the basics and explores further.
