Lesson 1 Instructional Materials

Prepared index cards defining the following terms:

Linear equation an equation between two variables that gives a straight
line when plotted on a graph.
Slope intercept form y = mx + b
Slope - The slope of a line (also called the gradient of a line) is a number that
describes how "steep" it is.
y-intercept The y-intercept of a line is the point at which the line crosses
the y-axis (where the x value equals 0).
Life Size Graph Prior to class, I will create a life-size coordinate plane on the floor
of the classroom using masking tape.
Linear Equations Linear equations will be handed out to each group of 3 or 4 to
demonstrate on the life-size graph.

Lesson 2 Instructional Materials

Worksheets Students will complete a worksheet to practice the learning target: I
can recognize and identify linear equations and solve for intersecting points. The
students will be instructed to manipulate the equations into slope intercept form,
set the equations equal, and solve the system of equations to find the intersecting
points. As an opportunity to receive extra credit, the students will be asked to graph
the two linear equations. This worksheet will begin to prepare the students for what
they will be assigned for homework.
Worksheet can be found on the following website:

Lesson 2 Instructional Materials

Color the Lines Sample - The students task is to create an image on the xy
coordinate plane. They will be instructed to create the slope, y intercept, and
intersection points of two of the lines. With the completed sample, students will be
able to visualize what is being asked of them and I will demonstrate each individual
step that they will be performing.

Subject: Algebra

Goal: Your task is to create an image on the xy coordinate plane. The image needs to
be centered around the origin and in all four coordinates. Every line that you draw should
be connected to at least two other lines.
Role: You are an artist.
Audience: You need to impress the art gallery directors (your peers)
Situation: The challenge involves you choosing an image and creating it using lines (so
you will want to choose something that is not too complex)
Product/Performance and Purpose:
You will create an image by tracing an image on a piece of graph paper using pen.
You will create an xy - coordinate grid on the paper with the origin being the
center of the paper.
Begin recreating the image using only lines (use pencil)
You are to find and label all of the intersecting points of the lines.
Using the coordinates, you are to calculate the slope of each line.
On a separate sheet of paper, you are to write out all of the equations that make up
your image.
Standards and Criteria for Success:
Your work will be judged by an art gallery director (one of your peers)
1. Give your peer editor the list of your equations ONLY.
2. As the peer editor, you will graph all of the lines. (Using algebraic
equations to solve for all intersection points)
3. When the peer editor is done graphing the lines and solving for the
intersection points, compare your work.
