A Day Never To Be Forgotten

This day began as any other, children and spouses saying good byes for school and
work; a day with the sun smiley brightly on the east coast of America, waking up its
citizens who continue in their trials, triumphs and their individual pursuit of happiness.
The west coast having yet to feel the warm kiss of the sun, a dark cloud begins to erupt in
the east that will stretch overseas. Not a cloud of rain or snow, but of turmoil for families,
for soldiers, for nations.
The evening of this dreadful day in a small school this incident was addressed. The
president of the United States of America addressed the American public and a few nations
across the world of the attacks of sept 11, 2001. He begins the address by establishing the
emotional intensity of the situation. The writer goes into vague yet meaningful detail of
those who had lost loved ones and ties his listeners to their feelings with specific use of the
words us we and our throughout the text; doing so also acts as a re-building tool as an
effort to create a stronger sense of community and neighborly care. He goes on to explain
how were a nation that as a whole cannot be defeated. Calming down the intense emotions
going through the American citizens hearts and minds, he appeals to the majority of
Americans chosen religion of Christianity by quoting a verse from the Holy Bible.
In George bushs presidential address he establishes ethos by explaining the
process, which by the time of his speech had already begun, that would be taken to resolve
the issues that the attack caused. He explains the actions that will be taken had begun after
the first attack by putting to use our nations emergency response plans. Thus putting

minds at ease of our own citizens and allied countries across the world and solidifying that
America the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity still stands strong.
In the opening paragraph of the text the president uses the word our three quick
times establishing ethos. In the second paragraph he explains a little about the casualties of
the event as being every-day people, moms and dads. The organization of these first two
paragraphs leads us to being connected on a more emotional level.
He then establishes a main point in saying that the attacks of that day were wrought
by evil doers, tying into the logos of the majority of the citizens being religious who
consider serious actions like the attacks as not just unfortunate, but evil. The first four and
a half paragraphs, ending with These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our
nation into chaos and retreat, are organized to show us that the government understands
and is admitting we as a country were hit. That sets up for the following paragraphs to
show a contrast of the beginning and explain how we are going to hit back, and much
harder and more long lasting.
The speaker then re-addresses the good vs. evil aspect with a reference of America
being the brightest beacon of hope and freedom. Light being a key reference used
throughout religious scripture (which as mentioned earlier connects with the majority of
Americans, his main target audience) representing good and darkness representing evil. A
large portion of the text is directly appealing to logos. He goes on to establish in the minds
of the listeners the process which will take place to find those responsible and hold them
accountable. Its mentioned that what he is explaining has already begun happening at the
time of his speech showing what a high priority it was at the time. Theres mention of the

people surrounding those directly affected by the attacks helping out those around them in
any way they can and explain how the government functions and world market world
continue to be up and running the next day, furthering the appeal to logos. These
paragraphs also reiterate the main point that we as a country, standing together, cannot be
beat. Mentioning that everything will run the same as the day before, and the morning
before the attacks just the same the very next day after the attacks, shows the truth in the
statement that we as a country stand strong together and solidifies that statement to the
reader.
