Lesson Objective

SOL 6.7 Living Systems

The student will investigate and understand the natural processes
and human interactions that affect watershed systems.

Purpose of the lesson

The purpose of this lesson will be to create a summative project on

the Living Systems unit. The student will be able to discuss the
location and structure of Virginias watershed systems. They will
be able to discuss and differentiate between wetlands, estuaries,
and river systems. They will be able to discuss conservation and
health and safety issues associated with watersheds.

Activity

The class will create a Weebly website where each group will be
responsible for a specific page. One page on wetlands, one page on
estuaries, one page on rivers, and one page on conservation. The
teacher will create the title page with table of contents for each
specific page and then show the students how to access their
section to add content. Each page will contain research for each
specific area and the student will be able to embed maps using
Google Maps of the locations in Virginia where these areas exist,
pictures, and any other multimedia of their choosing. They should
be able to show location, definition, why this area meets the
definition, and wildlife that might be found there, supported with

maps and pictures. The page on conservation will be specific to

Virginia and discuss problems and possible solutions to these
problems. When the website is completed, the groups will be able
to share the website, each presenting their own page, in class.
They will then have created a class website about Virginia s
Watershed systems and human interaction with them. The
website can then be shared online or with other classes in the
school. The website can also be used as a study guide for later
tests/quizzes on this specific SOL. Students will be able to learn
from each others pages. By using the comment feature, they can do
peer-reviews and discuss areas further as needed.
Assessment

The teacher will be able to monitor the students work as they

progress throughout the assignment. The teacher will give
feedback before the final website is created and students will be
able to edit as they receive feedback. The Weebly blog feature
allows for comments. The teacher will be able to leave comments
directly on each groups page with feedback and suggestions. The
teacher will then be able to use this website as a resource to
review this lesson with the class as needed. Students can access
the website as a study tool outside of the classroom.
