PRESENTATION
OF MATERIAL
Display the Larry Lion card, and have children name the letter on the
picture.
Tell the children that:
The letter l stands for the sound /l/, as in lion. When you see an l,
remember Larry Lion. That will help you remember the sound /l/
The teacher will: write lion on the board. Underline the l.
Ask the children:
What is the first letter in the word lion?
What sound does the letter make?
Display chart paper with the capital L and small l. Show the children how
to write the capital L and small l.
The teacher will say the penmanship rhyme: When you practice writing
the capital L, you will make a tall, straight line that starts on the top.
Come down to the bottom, go out and stop.
When you practice the small (l) it will look like a stick. Just write one
straight line. (That is easy and quick)
GUIDED
PRACTICE
In a pocket chart, the Letter L card is displayed and the picture cards are
in random order. Review the sound for l. In turn, children can name a
picture, say the beginning sound and put the picture card below the letter
L. Tell children that they will sort more pictures for the letter l and in the
Phonics Center later today.
Tell the children that now they will learn to write letters that stand for /l/:
capital L and small l. Write each letter as you recite the penmanship
rhymes. Chant each rhyme as the children write the letter in the air.
INDEPENDENT
PRACTICE
Have children practice writing the capital L and small l on the lined paper
while reciting the penmanship rhyme.
CLOSURE
Remind children that today we learned the letter L and its sound. Review
the Larry Lion lyrics with the children by reading and singing them
together.
Say to the children: Remember the letter L makes the sound like Larry
Lion. To remind them of the letter and the sound.
Next, repeat the penmanship rhyme together while practicing writing the
capital L and small l in the air.
Literacy Centers
1. Writing Center- practice handwriting; sticker stories (use 1 to 2 stickers and write a story)
2. Computer: Students visit websites that support current learning. Starfall.com and
ABCya.com

http://www.jmeacham.com/smart.board.htm Links to many activities that can be played
during centers (under word work)
3. Work with teacher: I pulled small groups reading level and skill level. I made sure I met
with my struggling readers more often. I would call them over and they would return to
their centers when finished.
4. Read or Write the Room: Students walk around the room and write down what they see. I
gave a target (find words that have a short a sound). They record on a sheet.
5. Skill Center 3 (phonics etc.): Students practice sight words, phonics flashcards, phonics
