Unit Objective
The students will learn about the different technologies used to produce energy with an emphasis on the
renewability of those sources

LESSON OBJECTIVE
Content Learning Goals and objectives
1. Given a set of power generating sources, name the renewable sources with 100% accuracy.
2. Given a power source, be able with describe the way in which water is used in the power generation.
Student Participation
Students will use the computer to research and organize the information pertaining to renewable energy.

Standards

TN science Standard: GLE 0707.7.5 Differentiate between renewable and nonrenewable resources in
terms of their use by man.

ISTE Standards

3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use
information.
A. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a
variety of sources and medi

MATERIALS:
1. Computer

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE

The student with have an understanding of the different ways in which tennessee creates

power for its citizens and which of those sources are renewable.

Not addressed

The idea of sustainability and renewable energy sources would be discussed prior to this

lesson. The students will have idea going into the lesson what sustainability in energy is.

A discussion on other renewable energy sources that are not present in Tennessee would be

had with the students. We would discuss the importance of water in all the forms of energy
production in the lesson today

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE

Introduction

Discuss what renewable energy means

Ask children to talk about renewable resources and sustainability as they know it.

Ask students how we generate electricity to power large cities like memphis.

Discuss power generation

Procedures
Prior to computer (10mins)
Teacher Procedures
1. Instruct the students to write down on a sheet
of paper what they know about power
generation
2. Instruct the students to discuss their writing
with other students
3. Assist as needed

At the computer (30mins)

Student Procedures
4. Write roughly 5-8 sentences on power
generation
5. discuss with peers

Teacher Procedures
1. Instruct the students to open Internet Explorer
and Word on their computers.
2. Instruct the students to navigate to the TVA
website
3. Show the students an example of a 4 by 2
table.
4. Instruct the students to fill in the table with the
4 types of power generation Tennessee uses on
the top row. The second row the students will
use to write a description of the type of power
generation and its level of renewability.
5. Monitor and assist as needed

After the computer (30mins)

Teacher Procedures
1. Instruct the students to get into groups of 3 and
discuss what they found
2. Instruct them to pay attention to the way in
which water is used in each type of power
generation
3. Assist as needed

Student Procedures
1.
2.
3.
4.

Open Internet Explorer and Microsoft Word.

Navigate to the TVA webpage
Create a 4 by 2 table in Word.
Write the 4 types of power generation in the
top row
5. Write a description of each power generation
techniques
6. Include the level of renewability of each power
source

Student Procedures
1. Discuss individual charts with 2 other students
2. Pay attention and discuss the use of water in
each type of power generation.

Closure
Select volunteers to read aloud their table. Discuss waters use in all these power techniques with the students.
Show students other renewable power sources not used in tennessee such as solar and wind.
