LESSON PLAN FORMAT

University of North Texas

Art Education

I. Lesson Number, Grade Levels, Title, and Duration:


Modified Paintings, 9th Grade, 2 Days
II. Lesson Rationale: Through this lesson the students will learn different styles of paintings and how
artwork can be modified to change its message. These are important concepts because as creators of
artwork, learning of the types of art and the message of art, helps improve the creation process.

V. Lesson Objectives:
By the end of this lesson the students will be able to recognize differences in painting styles.
By the end of this lesson the students will be able to understand how message can change depending
on factors such as subject matter, composition and context.
VI. Specific Art Content:
The Hierarchy of Painting will be taught as well as Non-Representational and
Geometric/Perspective style drawings. There will be learning of specific artworks, unique to
individual students. Consideration of subject matter, composition and context will also be taught. The
notion of message or purpose of artwork will be taught as well.

IX. Instruction and Its Sequencing:
Day of the Lesson (1st Day)
1. Introduction/Motivation:
For the hook to this lesson, I will ask the students if they can identify a famous image that has
been zoomed in. I will show the students the website we will be working with explain the
lesson.
2. Guided Practice
I will walk the students through how to navigate Google Art Project. I will show them how to
find artwork and how to screenshot an image. I will show them where to upload their original
image and zoomed image. I will also show them where to post their explanations.
3. Independent Practice
Students will navigate the Google Art Project website on their own and choose their seven
original images. They will save their original images in their own gallery on the Google Art
Project.
4. Closure

I will close the lesson by asking the students to think about what styles they will choose to
change the original image.
5. Formative Evaluation
I will be walking around the classroom checking in on the students. I will be asking them about
the photos they are choosing and what each one represents. If it seems like most of the students
do not understand the lesson, I will go over the explanation again for everyone to see.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
I will walk around the classroom making sure every student is on task.
Day of the Lesson (2nd Day)
1. Introduction/Motivation:
To reintroduce this lesson, I will briefly go over the task at hand
2. Guided Practice
I will briefly explain how to zoom into the picture and take a screen shot.
3. Independent Practice
The students will be zooming in to the images they had saved and take a screen shot to apply a
different style than the original. They will then post their images to the blog on our class
website. After posting their pictures they will write 2-3 sentences in the comments section of
the class blog.
4. Closure
After the completion of the lesson we will discuss as a class what they did and why they chose
to zoom on a particular part. I will ask for some volunteers to share their work with the class.
5. Formative Evaluation
I will be checking in on the students as they are cropping their pictures. If there are questions
they will be addressed.
6. Classroom Management Procedures
I will walk around the classroom making sure every student is on task.
Repeat 1-6, as needed, for each class session needed for this one lesson.
X. Summative Assessment and Evaluation:
The evaluation will be mostly about if the students correctly exemplified the style terms, original and
modified. There will also be great consideration of the how the message of the artworks are changed.

XI. Interdisciplinary Connections:


This lesson could connect to other subjects in the sense that logic and reasoning are important. The
students are assigned to explain their choices so that they better understand their artistic modification
choices. This activity could relate to subjects such as Philosophy. Art History could also be tied with
this lesson because the students will be learning about all different works.
