History
During the great depression everyone was having a rough time, people
from all classes. Our government was torn, do we help these people or do
we not? Of course they wanted to help them, but as it says in the first part of
the article people need to be able to help themselves before they can expect
any one else to help them.
The first document discusses people trying to live without work. Some
citizens just say this as an opportunity used to get money, acting like they
couldnt get a job and that their families were starving. Even though they
knew that if someone were to walk up to them and offer them a job they
would not take it. This angered many Americans due to the fact that the
money that was going to those people were their hard earned tax dollars.
In the second part of the article it talks about how everyone is suffering
and that the government should step in and help whenever possible. The
argument they use is that even people that would normally have a lot of
money like doctors, lawyers and such do not have any at this point, and are
living like they are poor.

This argument has me torn in two different ways, I like how in the first
part it talks about that you cannot help people until they help themselves,
but also if people really do need help the government should step in. how
would you tell? Thats the question.(Document on pg. 698)
