Unit 1: Development and characteristics of ICT

The concept of convergence as it applies to ICT

Information communication technology emerges from the convergence process. This
convergence process has been defined as the ability of one or different networks to carry
different services as cited by Hellerstein (2008) in the document the impact of regulatory
framework. This document also stated that it is the bringing together of industries in the
communications area which were previously viewed as separate and distinct in both the
commercial and technological sense.
The convergence of these services brought benefits to all persons involved. The following
are some benefits that have been derived from the convergence process according to
Hellerstein (2008).
1. Companies were able to deliver services across technology platforms.
2. The expansion of competition allowed the introduction of inter-modal competition between
networks and technologies without technological or regulatory restrictions.
3. Cost of communication services were reduced
4. It fosters the development of more different technologies and services
5. Convergence opens the door for new ways for people to obtain internet access.
6. New competitors were able to enter the markets due to the convergence of technology
In the early childhood setting children in preschools are able to learn creatively. This is
possible as they manipulate integrate and adopt the information that they have gained to build
on their previous knowledge. The use of technological tools is used to engage students in the
classroom which helps to motivate their learning. However there are times when technological
are not in use due to fact that they may not be available or not in good working condition.
The convergence of ICT tools made it possible for students to be involved in distance
learning. It helps us as students to improve our awareness and build our communication
skills. However, the unreliability of ICT infrastructure may sometimes cause
problems. Additionally, lack of awareness and low levels of computer literacy can hinder
access in less developed countries than those that are well developed.

Unit 2: Learning theories that guides ICT-mediated Learning

ICT tools used in the classroom to enhance teaching and learning

The use of ICT tools in the classroom helps the teacher to interact with the children. In my
preschool setting the children are in tuned to the DVD and the Computer. These tools are used
to enhance images and the children are able to get a better understanding of what is being
taught. Technology is rising and the school has the internet as part of ICT mediated learning of
which the children are benefiting.
The constructivists believe that children learn better when they are actively engaged in their own
learning. They will have a better understanding of what is being taught and will be able to relate
to the concepts. The constructivist theory is pertinent to the successful ICT mediated
learning. According to Chen (2011) in the constructivist learning environment students actively
perform tasks in authentic and social settings and that knowledge is acquired as they reflect on
their past and present experiences.

Unit 3: Internet and web based education

Why authenticity is important in the realm of education? What should teachers do to
ensure students are finding suitable reliable information from internet sites when collecting
information?
We are living in a fast changing world where technology is growing and students are learning
from virtual classrooms. However, when using information from different sources it is important
that it is authentic. The information gathered should be genuine and one must be able to verify
such information. In the educational realm the source of any information should be a matter of
concern as information that is not credible can be circulated which could be misleading. The
learner can also become frustrated as well.
Students should be provided with the necessary guidance as to how to use information from
Internet sites. Therefore providing credible links for web pages could be of great help in
ensuring that students are using accurate information. To prevent misleading information
students should be encouraged to provide proper referencing for their work so that verification
can be made for authenticity.

Unit4: Educational application of web 2.0 tools

Discuss how you can in corporate blog, wikis and social networks as affordances in your subject

areas and among your unique set of learners.

Web 2.0 tools are essential affordances in the learning environment. They assist individuals and
groups to create valuable knowledge and facilitate collaboration. Web 2.0 tools facilitate
learning out of the classroom. A blog is a journal entry which could be frequently is updated.
Therefore blogging is the sharing of personal reflection in any chosen subject area. Persons can
post their information where other people can have access to it and make comments. It
encourages people to be critical thinkers and promote their creativity also social interaction and
reflection. Wikis on the other hand is used by multiple authors who collaborate for a single
purpose. They can be valuable affordances in subject areas as they are sources of information
that students use for research. Wikis can be used for virtual classroom sessions group
assignments and other resources. Social networks as a web 2.0 affordance tool facilitates lifelong
learning. In my unique set of learners you tube is use to stimulate the children where they can
watch videos on specific subject areas. Students are able to interact with their peers about
learning materials as well as build lasting relationships.

Unit 5: Higher-order thinking skills with ICT-mediated instruction

ICT tools used in the Caribbean that can assist with the development of higher order
thinking skills
In order to be able to use ICT tools we must possess higher order thinking skills. Every human
being possesses these skills but some people are able to function more effective than others
due to knowledge and experience. In my area of learners which is the preschool some ICT tools
such as DVD, smart phone, tablet, computer, video camera and IPod. These can help to assist
with the development of higher order thinking skills in the classroom.

Unit 6: Assistive Technologies in Education

Inclusive classroom and specific assistive technologies that can help unique set of
learners who may have impairment?
Inclusive education means to give all children whether disabled or normal the opportunities to
make choices and participate actively so that they can explore and experience their
environment. Therefore in an inclusive classroom setting provisions should be made for those
children who are physically impaired. There should be supportive learning material and tools
that will enhance children learning. The teacher in the classroom should have strategies in place
that will meet the varying needs of all the students regardless of their cultural background. An

inclusive classroom should be conducive to learning that is it should be arranged so that it is

accessible to all students as well as the learning material.
Anything that is used to help disabled people to function effectively is called assistive
technology. Some assistive technologies that can help my unique learners are hearing aid,
jumbo pencils and crayons, changing grips on scissors handle and tablets where the print can
be enlarged.

Unit 7: Regional Initiative in Education

My role in ensuring that plans implemented for ICT based education is successful;
learners develop 21st century skills and colleagues are not only enlightened but willing to
use ICT tools
Information and communication technologies in education emphasize the importance as well as
support teaching, learning and administration in education. It is important for all stakeholders to
appreciate the effort the governments and ministry of education has placed in the integration of
ICT in schools. However, it is not done without many challenges and constraints that are
encountered daily. My role in ensuring that the plans for the integration of ICT mediated
instruction in schools be effective is to be a role model. It is important to be aware of the
theories of learning more so those of ICT-based instruction which involves teaching and
learning principles. I must therefore make use of the opportunities for professional development
in ICT. This will give me a better understanding of how to facilitate learning in the area of ICT by
implementing it across the subject areas to support learning. I will be able to assist learners in
developing 21st century skills by achieving the learning outcomes in ICT. Moreover, this can be
achieved by providing learning environments to supporting ICT. Addressing the needs of
individual learning by involving students in their own learning can also support learners in
developing lifelong skills. Additionally, encouraging colleagues in the use of emails, wikis and
blogs will help them to get a better understanding of the use of technologies

Unit 8: Policy making for ICT-mediated Education

ICT policy impact within working organization
The use of ICT tools in the delivery of ICT- mediated instruction in the classroom has become
high on the agenda when planning the curriculum. It is therefore important to keep abreast of the
growing changes that are taking place in the development of new technologies. In my institution
there are policies in place for staff development in the area of ICT-mediated instruction so that
teaching and learning can be effective. Emphasis is placed on the use of ICT tools to enhance
the quality of education in the classroom.

What are the strengths?

Computers were distributed in the schools for teachers and students. Children in the higher
grades were given laptops with the intention of upgrading their skills in ICT. Schools were also
given internet connections so that these students will be able to access the World Wide Web.
This opportunity would have placed them in a better position to search for whatever information
they required. Collaboration between parents, teachers and students was encouraged as teachers
were able to send and receive valuable information with the use of email.
What are the weaknesses?
The computers are inadequately kept and are sometimes in a state of disrepair. The majority of
them are not working because they have been seriously damaged and the required part is not
readily available. There is a problem of poor internet connection where the unit will collapse
due to over load or poor connectivity.

What opportunities are there?

To be able to deliver effectively in the classroom teachers must be knowledgeable about the use
of ICT tools. Moreover, teachers are trained so that they will be in a better position to deliver a
curriculum, that is ICT based that will benefit all stakeholders involved.

What threats are there?

Students using the internet sometimes miss use this resource for different reasons other than its
intended purpose. Some students are serious about their work while others indulge in activities
that are less rewarding.
It does not matter what perspective is taken when using ICT tools for mediated instruction in
teaching and learning there are advantages and disadvantages. These challenges must be
anticipated and addressed in the planning of ICT policies.
