LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Your Name: Janae Wilson

Title of Lesson:
Grade: 5-8th grade level
STANDARDS
NOTE: Please list at least two complete standards your lesson plan covers. [Common Core State Standards
(math and language arts), Next Generation Science Standards (science), Arizona State Social Studies
Standards (social studies)].
Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or
performing technical tasks. (68.RST.3)

LESSON SUMMARY/OVERVIEW
Provide an overview/synopsis of the lesson and the topics that it will cover. Make sure to provide a reason
why you selected this to be relevant for a unit on sustainability?
The lesson will proved a visual of dirty water and show the importance of having clean water to drink. The students
will be able to compare clean drinking water to dirty water. The water filtered will show the process in which it will
take for the dirty water to become clean. The lesson plan is very relevant to the unit on sustainability because
without clean drinking water we can come across a great deal of health concerns and can impact the environment.
OBJECTIVES
Describe what you want students to know/be able to do as a result of the lesson.
For example, Students will be able to
Students will be able to see the difference between clean water and dirty water
Students will be able to conduct a clean water filter to turn dirty water into clean water
Students will be able to see the impact of having clean drinking water can have on the population
Students will be able to see how polluted water can impact the environment
Students will be able to explain how the water filter works to turn it into clean drinking water
Students will be able to show the importance of clean water
Students will understand the importance to be able to access clean water
ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION
What measures will you use to know if you students met the objectives?
Students will be able to complete the observation on what they seen in the water filter. Students will also be able to
explain the importance of having clean water. The students will turn in their observation sheets to how they
understood the lesson and the impact of having clean water. The teacher will grade the observations from the
students to make sure the objective of the students met it. Stundets will be able to construct water filter using
material provided.
PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE
What will students need to know prior to completing this lesson and how will you access their prior
knowledge?
My students will only need to know the importance of water and how we need it to survive. I dont expect them to
know too much about it and that is why we will be filling out a KWL sheet so we can compare what we didnt know
before the lesson to what we know once the lesson is complete.
MATERIALS
List of required materials.
2 liter water bottle
Water
Dirt (Penical Scarping , rocks , sand)
Cotton Balls
Scissors

VOCABULARY/KEY WORDS
List of key vocabulary terms.
Water Filter removing chemicals , for safe drinking water
Pollution- affects environment ; may have harmful or poisonous effects
Hard Water- water in lakes , rivers on the ground and in wells
Soft Water- may contain minerals , viruses and bacteria
Raw Water has many germs and viruses , may be hard water also
Observations- the action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information
Filtration- the action or process or filtering something
TEACHING PROCEDURES
Procedural Steps (Step by step instructions for teaching the lesson): To begin this lesson we will have all the
materials placed on the table, with the two liter bottle of water we will cut the bottle in half
Teacher will ask students if they know what it means to have clean water
Teacher will explain the importance of having clean drinking water
Teacher will introduce the lesson by showing video of turning dirty water into clean water
Teacher will have students discuses what they seen in the video and the impact it had
Teacher will then have students get into groups
Teacher will then explain to the students that they will be completing a water filter to
Turn dirty water into clean water
Teacher will then pass out cups to each student
Teacher will then take plastic bottles and give it to each student
Teacher will have one student from the group and have them come to the front of the classroom and get a cotton ball
Teacher will then have the students take pencil scarping , and other things and place them in the cup
Teacher will instruct students to take the top of the bottle place it into the end of the bottle and place the cotton balls
in it to stop anything from coming out
Teacher will make sure students are taking the dirt and material and put them in the bottle that has the cotton balls in
it
Teacher will have student Place the rocks on top of the sand and pencil shavings,
Teacher will have the student then take the dirty water and pour it inside the bottle with the sand and rocks
Teacher will explain after the dirty water is poured observe how much of the water when though
Teacher will let students know when it is enough water, take the dirty water you originally started with and compare
it to the water that you just poured though the water filter you just created.
Teacher will then have students discuss their water filters and what they observed
Teacher will have students walk around and observe their classmates water filters
Teacher will then have students take out piece of paper and write down there observations
Teacher will have students bring the papers to the front to be turned in
Teacher will then have students discuses as a class what they observed and what they thought about the
assignment.

WAYS OF THINKING CONNECTION

Provide a complete explanation of how your lesson plan connects to futures, system, strategic, or values
thinking. Define the way of thinking you selected and used in this lesson plan. Remember, this should be
included meaningfully in the lesson plan.

My lesson plan connects to futures thinking because we are learning how

to filter our own water. It is futures thinking because we are finding ways
to turn our polluted water into clean water. I like this lesson because we

can physically see the dirty water then turn into a cleaner version of
water it is still not clean enough to drink but I believe my students will be
able to see the difference in the water before it went through the filtration.
