Dear: Lesley Margetak
My name is Michael Knight. I grew up on a family owned cattle ranch, outside of the small town
of Alix, AB. As such, I was a member of the local 4-H club for nine years. I am currently a
fourth year student at the University of Lethbridge working towards my B.Sc. and B.Ed. degrees.
It is my lifes ambition to become a high school Math and Science teacher.
I did not go to university straight out of high school; instead I took four years to try my hand at a
number of different jobs such as welding, working in a tire shop, on a dairy farm, public works
laborer, ranching and farming. None of these jobs were a proper fit for me. These jobs enabled
me to gain valuable life experiences, which I will be able to bring into your classroom. During
high school, I started my own mowing business. My business has grown from a small one man
company, to one with multiple contracts and several employees, not to mention the formidable
amount of equipment that I have purchased in the last seven years. This business/personal
success is an excellent demonstration of my ability to commit, organize and self-motivate. I am a
determined individual who pushes push myself and others to reach goals. All of these attributes
are essential to being a teacher and have been a part of my reason for choosing this prestigious
profession. I find that I would rather be a teacher than an employer, even though a number of the
skills are the same.
After completing my Ed 2500 class I was fairly certain that the teaching profession was for me.
Getting to work with children every day and seeing that look of understanding cross their face, I
know it sounds like a clich, is truly a priceless experience. I am not in this profession for the
excellent holidays, decent pay, working indoors or the fantastic benefits packages. No, Im in it
to see that look just as often as I can. What other job has so many rewarding opportunities? What
other job gives you the chance to make an almost daily impact on the lives of people?
My family is a close knit one that enjoys doing activities together such as baseball, curling,
bowling, and competitive card matches. I enjoy a simple, yet fun, social life filled with numerous
camping trips. I must confess that I am a bit of a book worm who reads just about anything that I
can get my hands on. I really look forward to working with your class and sharing as many of my
positive traits with the students as I can; as well as learning new ones from working with the
students and with yourself.
Sincerely yours,
