Bullying and its impacts: Literature Review

The University of Texas at El Paso

Abstract
Recent studies in the world show that bullying is at an all-time high from all levels and
perspectives. This literature review will inform the reader over these current issues that are happening
around the world. This paper will look at bullying from all point of views. This paper will have statistical
support and academic articles to support the idea. The paper will also go over how bullying isnt just
physically it can be mentally also. It will show all aspects such as cyberbullying and etc. All of the topics
stated will be addressed in the literature review paper.

In todays time and era kids and adults are venerable to be torn apart mentally and
emotionally by things their peers do to them. On a daily bases things in this world plays a big
part on someones life. Over the past couple of years people can say they lost loved ones to the
awareness of bullying. There are many factors we can take into consideration. There have always
been bullying in the world but where at the point where the awareness is at an all-time high. We
can say many things can result in a kid takin there life or hurting others. There are millions of
people involved in bullying cases and situations. Older people play a big factor in this but
surveys show that kids from grade 4 to 8 are involved in bullying more than anyone. Many
people will say these ages are when kids are trying to establish the crew they want to hang out
with and be associated with. Many kids dont even do it because there bullies they do it to
seem cooler to other people.(Joaquim, Christopher Joseph, July 2014, p81-99). School policies
should be set to eliminate bullying. Surveys also show that boys/men are more associated with
these situations then woman because why? Many people will say that because men are more
aggressive and want to be seen as a dominant person. Many people will agree to this because in
this time and age and even back then men were raised or taught to the dominant person on
anything there were doing. Other possible factors that people say result in the concept of bullying
is games kids play. Games can teach kids how to fight and bad language and make kids more
aggressive than they already are. Thats why to this day many parents are protesting to ban
certain games completely and take them out of stores. Some parents dont even allow some kids
to play violent games. But thats the smallest part of this situation many say movies teach kids
how to behave inappropriately. Movies teach kids actions and language. Bullying also happens
over social media website which is called cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the way that people
bash others over the internet with words and pictures that can destroy someones view on life

completely. How can we prevent cyberbullying completely? The following three questions
should be considered:
1. Does bullying have an impact on the world in any way?
2. Should schools start programs to eliminate bullying?
3. How can we prevent cyberbullying?
Does bullying have an impact on the world in any way?
Parents in the world are concerned whether to send their kids to school or home school
there child. The impact bullying has on the world is playing a big part on kids lives. Some kids
are scared to go places without seeing that person that makes fun of them every day. The impact
can also affect these kids mentally and physically. It can make kids depressed, sad and health
issues. These patterns of kids issues can be carried out to their adult life. How does bullying
impact the world?
Physical effects are becoming a big factor in the world today resulting from bullying.
The outcome of bullying and suicide plays a big part with each other. Kids retaliate in major
violent ways not too often. When they do we know about it such as school shootings and when a
kid kills there aggressor. Most of school shootings the shooters was bullied when asked. This
doesnt just play a factor on schools this leads to people being killed that shouldnt have been
killed. All of this not only plays a factor on the kids who are being bullied and parents of loved
ones being lost, it also later on affects the aggressor. Kids who bullying others are sometimes
having tough times at home, and the only way to get there frustration out is to harass other
people. (Babarro Javier, p357-363, 2014) Bullying is a subtype of aggression that can adopt

many forms (physical, verbal, and relational). There are many roles people play in certain
situations of bullying.
Does the fact that many kids in the future are venerable to cases such as these. No one
wants there kid to grow up fearing other people because they dont know whats store for them.
The impacts that bullying has on the world can go forever. Many people are trying to take
actions and help others prevent certain situations as this. Prevention of bullying isnt the only
concern. Kids health play a big impact also. Risk comes with situations like this not only on the
victim but also on the aggressor and bystanders. Everybody is affected negatively because if
something happens bad to any of these people someone will feel bad.
Should schools start programs to eliminate bullying?
Schools around the world are trying to eliminate the subject of bullying in their schools.
Parents and guardians are trying to make efforts to build awareness bullying in school houses.
Efforts are being made to start after school programs for children to attend to tackle the effect of
bullying. Some people will say this is useless and will be ineffective. (Sampasa-Kanyinga,
Hugues, July, p1-9. 9p) many programs have been proposed to prevent or reduce bullying
behavior in schools. These programs are being created because of growing concerns and
increased incidents of bullying. Many schools are trying to het programs also because some
schools that have started these programs have had some type of result positively.
Prevention of bullying awareness is started to become noticed and people are starting to
take stands toward preventing these situations. (Low,Sabina, Sep 2014, pg.1 -9) Schools are
starting to make certain policies that can lead consequences for bullying aggressors. Some would
say this is doing too much cause kids should be able to defends there selves. Some would say

back then they didnt have programs or people to tell that they were being bullied. Todays
society have changed we are starting to involve programs for kids to come to that are being
bullied. These programs will help kids be able to learn how to overcome bullying. One major
adaption that was proposed was to have a one hour content of four routines. (Joaquim,
Christopher Joseph, July 2014, p306-319) stop, stopping, bystander and seeking support. These
kids in these programs at school will learn ways to be able to seek help if they are being bullied.
These four words attack all sides of the situation. Stop is for the victim, Stopping is for the
aggressor of the situation, bystander is for the person that is watching and has a chance to make a
difference on the situation, and seeking support is finding a person you can tell to get you help.
Some kids will have hard times following thru with these things because in todays society
anything yon do that is against what everyone does is labeled lame or whack. Situations such
as these will take time to develop but eventually everyone will have enough pride to not care
anymore.
How can we prevent cyberbullying?
Many will say that social media is the new way of life. Everyone in the 21st century has
some type of social media account. If you look up statistics many kids would say that eighty
percent of the day they have their phones in their hands. Websites such as Instagram, Facebook,
and Twitter are where all kids have conversations over the internet. On websites like these you
can see kids letting out all their emotions and posting funny things that everyone comments on
and laugh and put their intake on it. Things like this can lead to the wrong person saying
something they shouldnt of said to someone that is weak minded or emotionally unstable. This
can lead to someone getting upset and making judgment on themselves. They start to become
emotionally unstable and they continue to get beat up emotionally. This is called cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying is another form of bullying that can effect someone. Cyberbullying is believed to
the most effective way because more than one person is involved when it comes down to being
the aggressor.
Effects of cyberbullying are seemed to be more effective then encountering it in person.
Boys and girls are involved in cyberbullying of all ages. Social media websites are trying to
crack down on cyberbullying. Many cases have been reported. Statistics show that cyberbullying
plays a big part in a kids life. Cyber bullying also leads to many suicides and deaths to other.
The graph below will show you an example:

Social media isnt just the only form of bullying. It can happen thru email and text. The growing
number of cyberbullying victims over the past decade and the deleterious effects of
cyberbullying on victims are a great concern (Sampasa-Kanyinga, Hugues, July, p1-9. 9p).
In conclusion, whether or not bullying has a impact on the world is still to be answered.
This literature review takes research questions to ultimately break down and help you view
another view of the situation. The information provided above should help a reader or someone
interested become interested in the topic. Bullying is an important subject in the world because

even today bullying leads to a lot of people being hurt in a unnecessary way. I what way does
bullying have an impact on the world?
