Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son temple

Hoan Kiem Lake, an enhanting body of water right in the heart of Hanoi, is
considered the most beautiful lake in the city. The name Hoan Kiem ( sword restored) is
related to a legend of King Le Thai To.
The Ngoc Son temple was buit on an island in the middle of the lake. The temple
was named Ngoc Son pagodar and was renamed Ngoc Son temple, since temple were
dedicated to the scholar Van Suong who was considered to be one of the brightest stars
in Vietnam’s literary and intellectual cicles and the National hero Tran Hung Dao. Who
defeated the Mongols in the 13th century. Ngoc Son temple is reached via a wooden
bridge, which was contructed in 1885 .
After visiting Ngoc Son temple you may visit the shopping areas of the Old
Quarter , which are nearby.
Hanoi’s Old Quarter has a history that spans 1,000 years and represents the
eternal souleof the city. Located between the lake of the Restored Sword, the Long Bien
Bridge, a formed city rampart, and a citadel wall, the Old Quarter started as a snake and
aligator- infested swamp. It later evolved into a cluster of villages made up of houses on
stilts, and was unified by Chinese administrators who buit ramparts around their
headquarters.
