FORCES AND

NEWTON'S LAWS
Physics

What is a force??

A force is simply a push or a pull.

Examples:

You have 5 minutes to think about examples of

force.

Think about types of force

The Definition of Force:

Force is the external agent which attends

stable body to move or moving body to stop.

Question:

Is the force scalar or vector quantity? Explain.

Vector quantity, because the force has both

magnitude and direction.

Forces in the same direction- add the two

forces together.

=
Forces in different directions- subtract the
two and figure out which direction was the
stronger of the two.

Types of Forces:

Gravitational (FG):
The force of attraction
between two bodies
depending on their masses
and distance

Types of Forces:

Normal (FN):
The resistant reaction of a
bodys surface to a force by
another body in contact,
usually due to gravity

Types of Forces:

Tension (FT ):
The force when an object is
pulled from another object.

Types of Forces:

Friction (FF ):
The force that opposes
motion.

Force of Friction Friction is a contact force due to

electromagnetic attraction at the atomic level.
Standing or Static friction is a force that
prevents sliding from starting. Sliding or Kinetic
friction is a force that opposes motion once
sliding has started. Kinetic friction is less than

Newtons Laws

Law of Inertia:

Mass (kg)is the measure of the amount of

matter in an object.
INERTIA is a property of an object that
describes how much it will resist change to the
motion of the object.

More mass an object has means more

inertia the object will have.

Question:

What the difference between balanced and

unbalanced force?

What would cause balance and unbalanced

course?

Newtons Laws:

Newtons Second Law

Force = Mass x Acceleration
F=ma

Force is measured in Newton

ACCELERATION of GRAVITY Earth = 10

m/s2

WEIGHT is a measure of the force of graviton the mass

of an object
Weight (force) = mass x gravity (Earth)

Example:
The strength of gravity at the Earth's surface is 10
newtons per kilogram. Calculate the weight of a car
with a mass of 1500 kg.

Answer:
The formula is:
Weight = Mass Gravity
Hence:
Weight = 1500 10
= 15000 newtons
