FINAL UNIT

Overall standards and objectives for the Unit

Mathematics
M.O.1.1.14 Create grade-appropriate picture and
story problems using a variety of strategies (with
and without technology), present solutions and
justify results.
M.5.OA.2 write simple expressions that record
calculations with numbers and interpret numerical
expressions without evaluating them. For example,
express the calculation add 8 and 7, then multiply
by 2 as 2 (8 + 7). Recognize that 3 (18932 +
921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921,
without having to calculate the indicated sum or
product. (CCSS Math.5.OA.2)
English Language Arts
RLA.O.1.2.2 Construct complete sentences in
written compositions (e.g., capitalize the first
word, include a noun and verb, ending
punctuation).
RLA.O.5.2.2 arrange thoughts and ideas in
graphic representations to plan and write a
product.
RLA.O.3.3.3 create an age appropriate media
literacy product that reflects understanding of
format and characteristics.

SS.3.G.9 Create a legend to identify the path of
major explorers and chart those journeys on a
world map (e.g., Marco Polo, Christopher
Columbus, John Cabot, Hernando Cortes and Sir
Walter Raleigh).
Creating a Website
RLA.O.3.3.3 create an age appropriate media
literacy product that reflects understanding of
format and characteristics.
Students will create a website featuring factual
information about themselves.
Students will view my website as an example. We
will walk over the steps on how to create a
website. Students will have the ability to be
extremely creative.
Students will use a computer to create a free
website.

I will use a rubric to score the finished product of
the website. I will be looking for correct grammar
and spelling, creativity, content, and completion.
SMART Board Project
Mathematics
M.O.1.1.14 Create grade-appropriate picture and
story problems using a variety of strategies (with
and without technology), present solutions and
justify results.
Students will develop an understanding of
addition and subtraction word problems
Students will demonstrate knowledge of addition
and subtraction word problems
English Language Arts
RLA.O.1.2.2 Construct complete sentences in
written compositions (e.g., capitalize the first
word, include a noun and verb, ending
punctuation).
Students will write their own word problems
Students will learn about word problems by
breaking them down into different steps. I will
demonstrate on the SMART board and students
will have the opportunity to complete the activity
on the SMART board themselves.
Students will interact with the SMART board to
help gain an understanding about word problems.
Critical thinking and problem solving
Communication
Collaboration
Literacy
Productivity and accountability
Leadership and responsibility
I will observe student answers from the dry erase
board and SMART board to make anecdotal notes
about student learning.

Students will view my Animoto video. I will explain
that students will pick an explorer and map out a
journey they took. I will then have students create
an Animoto video of their own.

Students will understand the relationship between
mathematical expressions and the terms used to
define them. This lesson will prepare students to
solve expressions.
Students will learn create cheat sheets out of
paint chips to help transpose mathematical
expressions into number sentences. They will
watch a video demonstration on how to do so.
After the task has been mastered, they will create
a demonstration video on how to solve a problem.
Students will watch a YouTube video created by
