David Torres conversa con el exponente Grime en Houston y prximo debutante en Tri-Angle...

Sealado desde un inicio como uno de los representantes ms fuertes de la creciente escena, o al menos
comunidad de artistas electrnicos estadounidenses afectados por la influencia Grime y su diseo ms
futurista/reduccionista, Rabit practica una frmula instrumental que bien podra pasar por aliengena.
Vindose ligado a otros nombres indispensables del caldo de cultivo como son Visionist, Logos, Lotic o
SD Laika, el lder del sello y concepto Glacial Sound debutar prximamente en Tri-Angle con un
material que se prev apasionante.
Hoy y adems de recibir un nuevo Concepto MIX subtitulado Pandemic Transmission con el que nos
ha obsequiado, hablamos con l de sus influencias, primer contacto con el entorno eski, planes de futuro
y sus sensaciones ante el variado surtido de acepciones y etiquetas que se observan al hablar de sus
distpicas construcciones.

Cmo y cundo entras en contacto con la msica? Y con la electrnica concretamente?

Cules fueron tus primeras influencias, los primeros gneros que llamaron tu atencin?
Me cri en las afueras de Philadelphia, as que haba un montn de msica Soul en mi alrededor Y
tambin escuchaba Rock, R&B, cualquier cosa que estuviera sonando en la radio en el momento. Mi
hermana sola ir al skatepark, y yo empec a ir tambin, as que la msica que sonaba all fue una gran
influencia El DJ del skatepark siempre pinchaba freestyle, y cosas como Mantronix, Debbie Deb,
algunos temas de Madonna Esto fue durante el mismo tiempo en el que estaba entrando en el Rap.
Ms adelante, cuando fui un poco mayor, empec a salir en clubs y me enganch al Jungle.
Me gustara saber tambin qu fue lo primero que escuchaste de Grime, y qu productores son los que
ms te han influenciado.
Lo primero de Grime que escuch fue probablemente Dizzee Dizzee o Kano. Y en cuanto a quin me
ha influenciado Si hablas de productores de Grime, debo mencionar a Hindzy D, Youngstar, Wiley y
Logos.
Adems de fro y misticismo, tus beats provocan a su vez una sensacin csmica y
extraterrestre. Qu es lo que ms te inspira a la hora de producir? Me pregunto si tiene algo que
ver el hecho de tener la sede principal de la NASA tan cerca de casa
Qu me inspira a la hora de producir No lo s Nada Todo Simplemente hago sonidos y a veces
ellos crean una cancin. Despus de esto, normalmente trato de deducir el significado de lo que hice, y
de averiguar la forma en que tenga ms sentido para la gente, ya sea a travs del ttulo o de la
presentacin. Recientemente me lo he estado tomando mucho ms en serio, aunque Lo que quiero
decir, es que por ejemplo t sabes el momento en el que percibes algo realmente extrao Podra ser un
pjaro volando de una forma determinada, o la forma en que la luz se ve en l, o el estado de nimo que
tengas aquel da, aquellos momentos en los que t ests viendo algo y te preguntas si alguien ms lo
est mirando del mismo modo que t Si alguien ms est sintiendo lo que tu sientes Esto es lo que
me inspira ahora, la idea de que tengo una plataforma y que puede conectar con gente As que con
esto me siento como si tuviera la responsabilidad de continuar con el dilogo Pero tambin de hacerlo
significativo. As que esto es lo que me inspira ltimamente; las cosas que puedes sentir pero no
describir La idea de que tal vez hay gente en la Tierra que est en sintona, viendo las mismas cosas y
sin quedarse ciegos.
Qu herramientas utilizas para producir tus tracks? De qu hardware y/o software se compone
tu estudio?
Mquinas y ordenadores. Secuenciadores. Cosas simples en su mayora.
Al igual que tu paisano Lotic, debutaste en #FEELINGS, el sello de Ben Aqua, asentado tambin
en Houston Existe una all un pblico all para vuestra msica? Algunos otros productores
de all debamos conocer?
#FEELINGS se encuentra actualmente en Austin, Texas. Aqu en mi ciudad, no hay audiencia realmente.
Para m no hay escena. De todos modos, prefiero estar al margen. En cuanto a otros productores, tengo
a mi amigo Ghstsplntr aqu en Houston, l hace msica y tambin est haciendo un sello conmigo.

Sois de la misma ciudad y tenis muchas similitudes en cuanto a sonido Cmo y cundo os
conocisteis Lotic y t? Habis compartido estudio en alguna ocasin?
Nos conocimos online hace unos aos y empezamos a pasarnos msica, y ms o menos hemos seguido
hacindolo. Ambos empezamos juntos como bebs y hemos crecido mucho. Hicimos un proyecto juntos,
pero los resultados se quemaron en un incendio.
En tu primer EP hay una gran influencia Footwork Sigues produciendo tracks con esa
estructura? Cmo surgi el remix de Traxman?
Me alegra que me preguntes esto. Hice estos tracks alrededor de 2011, cuando estaba escuchando DJ
Rashad todo el rato. Realmente no he vuelto a hacer cosas como stas, con la naturaleza de la
creatividad vas pasando por varias fases y etapas Tal vez podra volver a hacerlas, pero nunca se sabe,
simplemente prefiero ir a donde el sonido me lleve. El remix de Traxman surgi porque sent que si me
iba a adentrar en el reino de este sonido, tena que hacerlo de la forma correcta; le pregunt si estara
dispuesto a participar en el EP, y lo estuvo.

Has publicado en el prestigioso sello Keysound, colaborado con Logos e inaugurado el sello
Glacial Sound con el sobresaliente Double Dragon EP Cmo ha surgido todo esto? Cmo
llega un productor de Houston a meterse de pleno en la nueva escena Grime-futurista de UK?
Viajas con frecuencia al Reino Unido?
Estaba en la escena antes de que existiera, supongo. Logos, yo y algunos otros tipos estbamos
trabajando cosas y rulndonos temas antes de que fueran publicadas por ningn sello o planchadas. Hice
Statellite (track que originalmente deba aparecer en el Double Dragon EP), Blackdown lo quiso para
Keysound as que se lo pas a ellos. As empec a sacar un montn de material afuera; sali la
recopilacin This Is How We Roll, y unos meses despus publiqu con Glacial Sound. Despus

Keysound me llev a pinchar en Fabric. sta fue la primera vez que sala de las Amricas, y la verdad es
que fue un poco loco el ir a Londres, Dubln, Berln y Bristol en un slo viaje.
Qu concepto hay detrs del Double Dragon?
Es un sonido. Una expresin. Para nada es un gran concepto. Simplemente yo tratando de formular una
imagen con ciertas texturas. Cristal, hielo, azul.
En esta nueva era del Grime se focaliza mucho en la instrumental, dejando de lado la figura del
MC Qu opinas al respecto? Te gustara trabajar con algn MC?
No tengo realmente una opinin sobre esto. Muchos de estos tracks podran sonar bastante mejor con
algunos raps por encima. Adems del Grime, tambin hay beats de Trap sin ningn rapero, lo cual es
realmente tonto la mayora de veces. En cuanto a m, estoy haciendo algunas cosas con Riko Dan. Si
alguien ms quiere trabajar, que me lo diga. Ahora mismo, para m mi propia msica es el centro de todo,
pero estara dispuesto a producir para otra gente. Me encantara trabajar con Rihanna, Tricky o alguien
as, pero con MCs tambin mola.
He visto en tu soundcloud que tu lbum debut lo sacars con Tri-Angle Cmo ha surgido el
contacto con Carolan? Qu nos puedes avanzar de este prximo LP?
Creo que Robin me llam despus de haber escuchado el track Sun Showers. Estuvimos en sintona en
cuanto a adnde queramos llevar las cosas. Una diablica unin fue forjada.
La filosofa de Tri-Angle suele girar siempre hacia lo oscuro, denso y gris, as que supongo que
sacars tu cara ms hostil en este LP
Es un proyecto que saldr en Tri-Angle en unos meses. An no puedo decir lo que es
A qu te dedicas aparte de la msica? Trabajas, estudias? Algn hobbie?
Trabajo. Paso tiempo con mi pareja. Trato de actuar correctamente y de no meterme en los. Sin
embargo, mi principal objetivo en este momento es escribir msica.
Hablemos de tu faceta como DJ Compras / utilizas vinilos? Cul es el track que nunca falta
en tus sesiones? Aparte de Grime, qu msica te gusta pinchar?
Publico en vinilo pero no lo pincho, me envan demasiados dubs y pincho demasiada msica rap. Un
track que nunca falte? Probablemente alguno de DJ Bake, o algo de Lotic que me haya pasado l para
pinchar. Aparte de Grime, puedo tirar hacia casi cualquier cosa
Adems del LP para Tri-Angle, qu planes de futuro tienes? Alguna gira por Europa?
Deberan salir varias cosas distintas de aqu a finales de ao; un 12 con Different Circles, el nuevo sello
de Mumdance y Logos, un white label o dos, un track vocal Y s, debera hacer algunos shows en
Europa de nuevo. Espero que salga un tour en Asia. Y en Centro y Sudamrica + el resto del mundo
libre.

How and when was your first contact with music? And with electronic music specifically? Which
were your first influences, the first genres that caught your attention?
I grew up outside of Philadelphia so there was a lot of soul music around..along with rock, r&b, whatever
was on the radio at the time. My sister used to go the skating rink and then i started going, so the music
there was a big influence..the dj at the skating rink only played freestyle and stuff like mantronixDebbie
Deb.. a few Madonna songs. That was around the time i started getting into rap music. Then when i was a
bit older i started going to clubs and getting into jungle.
Id also like to know what was the first thing that you heard about Grime, and which producers have most
influenced you.
The first grime i heard was maybe Dizzee..Dizzee or Kano. As far as who has influenced me..if youre
talking about Grime producers, Id say Hindzy D, Youngstar, Wiley, Logos.
Besides cold and sometimes mysticism, your beats turn generate cosmic and alien feeling. What
most inspires you when producing? I wonder if having the NASA headquarters close to home is
related with your sound
What inspires me when producing.I dont knownothing ..everything..I just make sounds and
sometimes they make a song.. After that i usually try and derive the meaning from what i made and how i
can best have it make sense to people, whether through the title or the presentation. Recently i have been
taking it alot more seriously though..what i mean is, you know that moment where you notice something

really strange.. It could be a bird standing a certain way,and the way the light looks on it, and the mood of
the day,those moments where you see something and wonder if anyone else is looking at it the way you
are.. if anyone else is feeling the way you feel..that is what inspires me now. The idea that i have a platform
and can connect with peopleso with that i feel like i have a responsibility to continue the dialogue..but
also to make it meaningful. So that is what inspires me lately..the things you feel but cant describe..the
idea that there may be some people left on earth that are all on the same page and seeing things and
arent blinded.
Which tools you use to create your tracks? What hardware/software have you got in your studio?
Machines and computers. Sequencers. Mostly simple things.
Like your countryman Lotic, you debuted on Ben Aquas label #FEELINGS, also based in
Houston Is there an audience for your music? Any other Houston producers we should know?
#FEELINGS is actually based in Austin, TX. Here in my city, theres no audience really. Theres no scene
for me. I prefer to be on the fringes anyway. As far as others, I have a friend Ghstsplntr here in Houston,
he does music and is also doing a label with me.
Youre from the same city, and you got a lot of similarities in sound How and when did you
know Lotic and you? Have you ever shared studio any time?
We met a few years ago online and started trading music and pretty much have kept on doing that. We
both started out like babies together and have grown a lot. We did a project together but the results were
burned in a fire.
Theres a lot of Footwork influence in your Terminator EP Are you still producing tracks using
that structure? How came the Traxman remix?
Im glad you asked that. I did those tracks around 2011 when i was listening to DJ Rashad all the time. I
dont really make stuff like that anymore, with the nature of creativity you go through stages and phases.. I
could maybe go back but you never know, i just prefer to go where the sound takes me. The Traxman
remix came about because I felt like if im going to enter the realm of this sound then i need to come
correct, I asked him if he would be into it and he was.

Youve released on prestigious label Keysound, collaborated with Logos and opened the Glacial
Sound imprint with the outstanding Double Dragon EP How came all that? How does a
producer from Houston to get full into UKs new futuristic Grime scene? Do you travel frequently
to UK?
I was in the scene before it was one, i guess. Logos and i and some other guys were working on stuff
and trading tunes before it was labelled something or press cared. I did Satellite which was originally going
to be on the Double Dragon EP, Blackdown wanted it for Keysound so I gave it to them. That kicked alot of
stuff off, the This Is How We Roll compilation came out then the Glacial Sound thing was some months
later. Then Keysound had me come play Fabric. That was the first time i had been out of the americas.
which was quite crazy, going to London, Dublin, Berlin, Bristol, all in one shot.
Which is the concept behind Double Dragon?
Its a sound. An expression. Not a high concept anything. Just me trying to formulate a picture with certain
textures. Glass, ice, blue.
This new era of Grime is really focused on the instrumental, putting aside the MC role What do
you think about that? Would you like to work with an MC?
I dont really have an opinion on that. Alot of these tracks would be much better with some bars on them.
Besides grime, theres also trap beats with no rapper, which is most of the time really dumb. As for myself,
Im doing a few things with Riko Dan. If anyone else wants to work they can holler. For me right now, my
own music is center stage, but id be open to producing for other people. Id rather work with Rihanna or
Tricky or something but MCs are cool.
Ive seen on your soundcloud that you will release your debut album with Tri-Angle How
emerged the contact with Robin Carolan? What can you tell us about your forthcoming LP?

Robin hit me up after he heard the Sun Showers track, i think. We were on the same page with where we
wanted to take things. An evil union was forged.
Tri-Angle philosophy usually turns onto dark, dense and grey, so I guess you will show your
most hostile face on that LP
There will be a project in a few months on Tri-Angle. I cant say what it is yet.
What do you do besides of music? Do you work, study? Any hobby?
I work. I spend time with my partner. I try to act right and not get into trouble. My main focus right now is
writing music though.
Lets talk about your DJ side Do you buy / use vinyl? Which is the track you never skip in your
sessions? Apart of Grime, which music do you like to play?
I release vinyl but i dont play it, i get sent too many dubs, and i play too much rap music. What track i
never skip? Probably something from DJ Bake or something from Lotic that hell yell at me for playing.
Aside from grime ill draw for almost anything..
In addition to that Tri-Angle LP, which are your future plans? Any Europe tour?
There should be a few different things out by the end of this year. A 12 on Different Circles, Mumdance
and Logos new label. A white label or two. A vocal track. And yea, i should be doing some shows in
Europe again. Hopefully a tour in Asia. Central and South America+the rest of the free world.
