Research Question
The topic that I chose for my informative project is street art. I became really interested
street art and started studying street artists while I was a senior in high school. Last year was my
favorite year in terms of art classes; our new art teacher, Mr. Hanson, helped me open up to
different mediums that Im not used to working with. For example, we did a spray painting unit,
where we studied street artists work and we even had the opportunity to make a spray paint
piece of our own. We watched a documentary called Exit Through the Gift Shop and I instantly
fell in love with street art, especially Banksys work. For my informative speech I am going to
talk about some of the most renowned graffiti artist in the world like Banksy, Space Invader,
Shephard Fairey, JR, Blu, and Keith Haring. Im going to start off by researching about each
artists personal life which would include their age, hometown, and any other basic information.
For each of these artist I am also going to research information about their unique styles of
artwork, the meaning behind their pieces, and how much their artwork sells for. Im also going to
briefly talk about the laws and restrictions that are put on street art and graffiti, along with the
censorship of it.
Research Process
In my research process I found a wide variety of different forms of reliable resources. I
found the articles and books by searching my topic on the One Search data base through the Rod
Library website. I also searched for the official websites of the artists I was researching to get

Christisen 2
credible information on them. I made sure to choose sources that are from recent years so they
are more relevant. I didnt have very many complications finding credible sources during my
research.

Space Invader is a 43 year old French street artist, and the cousin of the filmmaker of Exit

relies heavily on the use of mosaics. Invader started off making mosaics of the villains in
the arcade game Space Invaders, and installed them all over the streets of Paris. Space
Invader has travelled all over the world to places including Berlin, Miami, New York,
Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Hollywood. Invaders mission is to invade city by installing his
mosaics over a span of a few weeks. I found this source on the One Search database
through the Rod Library website.

Banksy. Wall and Piece. London: Century, 2005. Print

Wall and Piece is an autobiography that showcases many works of art that Banksy has
created and is a collection of his experiences and stories as a street artist. A lot of
Banksys work revolves around the ideas of peace, justice and freedom. In this book he
talks about the inspirations for his pieces of artwork and his adventures installing them.
Im going to include one of the quotes Banksy wrote in his book in my speech. He talks
about how graffiti is not the lowest form of art and the people who run our cities dont
understand graffiti because they believe nothing has the right to exist unless it makes

Christisen 3
profit. He also talks about how the people who truly deface our communities are the
companies that try to convince you to buy products with the use of billboards. Banksy
also says, Some people become cops because they want to make the world a better
place. Some people become vandals to make the world a better looking place. This is a
credible source because it is a book written by Banksy himself. Therefore, all of the
information included is based off of first-hand experiences.

DeNotto, Michael1. "Street Art And Graffiti." College & Research Libraries News 75.4 (2014):
208-211.Library Literature & Information Science Full Text (H.W. Wilson). Web. 19
Nov. 2014.
The beginning of this article talks about the origins of graffiti and street art and how these
terms are defined. Graffiti comes from the Italian word graffiare meaning to scratch, as
in on a surface. Today, graffiti means any sort of unsanctioned application of a substance,
whether its spray paint, pencil markings, or even stickers. The present day graffiti style
began in the 1970s in New York City, NY. The most common form of graffiti is a tag,
which is the artists signature. Societys perception on graffiti is changing over time and
is now recognized as a legitimate source of academic study. Its not as common for
society to view graffiti as purposefully destructive as graffitis intent to beautify the
urban environment. This article was written by Michaell DeNotto, who is an instruction
librarian at St. Marys University of Minnesota, which makes it a credible resource.
