Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Numbers - Develop number Sense.

Patterns & Relations Use patterns to describe the world and solve problems.
N1. Say the number sequence 0 to 100 by:
2s, 5s and 10s, forward and backward, using starting points that are
multiples of 2, 5 and 10 respectively
10s, using starting points from 1 to 9
2s, starting from 1
PR1. Demonstrate an understanding of repeating patterns (three to five
elements) by:
describing
extending
comparing
creating patterns using manipulatives, diagrams, sounds and action

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
Use number patterns to identify errors and missing numbers in a 100 chart.

ces:

Look for students understanding of the concept by their actions.

Can the students make an good estimate? Can they use a place
value mat to show 10s and 1s for a number?

activities, hold up hands to ask or answer questions.

Body
Count a cupful activity.
Explain to the students what they will be doing (working in
pairs). Give each pair a cup with items in it (each cup has less
than 100 items). They are to estimate how many are in the cup
and then count the items. They record their estimate and then
record the counted amount.

Observe students as they do the activity. Ask questions on how

they are estimating and how they are counting.

Learning Activity
#2

Measuring with Base 10 Blocks

Measure something in the class with the 10 blocks, have the
students count as I measure. Show the rod and explain it is a 10
because it is as long as 10 of the small blocks. Get them to
change the measurement from ones to count in tens.
Assign the students into pairs. Hand them the worksheet and
explain that they need to find something in the room that they
think is 60 blocks long.

min

15 -20 min

Observe the students as they complete the sheet. Ask

questions such as; How many 10s do you you have? How
many 1s?
Representing Numbers in Different Ways
Have the students model the number 35 on their place value
mat with the base 10 blocks. There are 4 different ways, can
you find them all? How are they ways similar? How are they
different?
Using poster 7B, talk about the numers on the race cars.
Remind them of the term digit and how we use it. Get them to
point to the number 42. Whats the 10s digit? Whats the ones
digit? What other car has a number with 4 tens?

.15 20
Min

Pass out the What is the number sheet. Explain that they are to
choose one of the race cars and model the number 3 different
ways on their sheet.
