Small Group Activity Form

Name of Activity:
Shoe box biography
Curriculum Area:
Social-Studies
Length of Activity:
15-20 Minutes
Learning Objectives (specify at least three):
1) The child will be able to identify what items he/she uses to get clean.
2) The child will be able to distinguish the differences and similarities in his/ her own items and the items
that their friend(s) use.
3) The child will be able to recall the process that he/she uses to get clean.
Material/Equipment Needed:
All material needed for this will be brought by the children, this includes the following:
Plastic bin/ Shoe box
Empty containers of what each child uses to get clean
Book, Keeping Clean by Liz Gogerly
Preparation (What do you need to do beforehand?):
Send a letter home with each child, asking the parents to help their child(ren) pack in a shoebox
the items in which they use to clean themselves.
Set up the book I will be reading with the children, Keeping Clean by Liz Gogerly
Procedures (step by step) Be Specific
*Beginning (How will I introduce activity?)
This lesson will be held on the first school day of the week, which is Monday. I will be introducing this
activity during circle time, in the morning. That way we will be able to have all of the children present
and engaged in this lesson.
Can you all have a seat, but remember to bring your shoe boxes. Thank you.
I will then open up my shoe box and describe my items and then my process for keeping myself clean.
I want to show you what I brought today in my shoebox. This is my Loofah, my Aveno body wash; I
use this because I cant use soap on my skin, it makes me itchy. This is my deodorant, doesnt it smell
nice? Im sure you all have one of these in your box, this is my toothbrush and my toothpaste, it makes
my mouth smell nice and teeth sparkle! Then I will explain the process I take to keep myself clean (i.e.
I put my body wash on my Loofah, I scrub my arms, face, tummy, and feet before I rinse off in the
shower)
Then, I will invite the children to explore my box and the items inside.
I will then say, Does some of my items match any of your items? To this they might respond, Yup, I
wash myself just like you do or My teeth are more sparkly because I brush them the longest, etc.
After acknowledging their answers I will say, Now it is time for each of you to show everyone else
what you brought.

The children will then pull out their boxes and open them individually, explaining to everyone the
process they take to get clean.
*Middle: (How will I support/enhance/scaffold?) The person reading your lesson plan should be able to
identify what you are saying or doing to support your stated learning objectives. THIS IS VERY
IMPORTANT.

As the children are showing each other their items I can scaffold them by helping them identify the
items in their box(es) if they do not know.
I can ask open-ended questions throughout the time which the children are sharing their items and
their process. This will help increase awareness of one anothers differences and similarities.
o Does anyone have the same item as someone else? If so, can you name that item?
While participating in this conversation, I can ask them comprehensive questions such as,
o What do you do to get clean?
By furthering their thought process I can encourage them in self-help by asking,
o What does mommy and daddy help you with? What can you do by yourself?
I can also continue to encourage the children as they explain how they keep themselves clean by
asking, What do you think the best time to brush your teeth would be? As the children act out how
they keep themselves clean (i.e. This is how I brush my teeth, then I spit, and then I rinse), I can
note each childs process and help them reflect on each others as they continue to identify
similarities and differences.
Reiterating the steps they take and pointing out what they do well in will help encourage them as
well. I see that you showed us all how you brush your teeth. I noticed that you also worked very
hard to explain that even flossing is important, etc.
Any additional materials will be supplied to the children after this time. I will supply cleaning items
for the dramatic play area. That way the children will be able to continue showing how to keep
themselves clean and improve through repetition. Enhancing their competence and self-awareness
skill can be increased in such activities as they continually learn how to best take care of themselves.
Repetition is important for such.

*End: (How will I bring this activity to a conclusion and transition to the next activity? Be very specific
in how you will transition the children.)
I will give the children five-minute a warning on this activity.
For cleaning up, the items in the dramatic play area will stay there for the remainder of the week.
After this activity and clean up, I will have the children meet on the circle-time rug and let them
know what we will be doing next, which is eating snack
We will then line up and head to the bathroom to wash our hands.
We will slide like slippery soap to our next activity.
Throughout the day/week, what opportunities will the children have to reflect back on this activity?
Throughout the remainder of the week, we will be practicing how to wash themself regularly.
The children will all be able to reflect on these activities on the future field trip.
The children can recall what was learned as they put together a plan to better keep themselves clean
at their homes with their parents/ guardians.
