The Process of MUMMIFICATION

Materials: Computer: PowerPoint Presentation, Book: The Mummy in Ancient Egypt, Pencils,
Mummification Vocabulary Worksheet, Steps of Mummification Worksheet, Colored Pencils

quantitatively, orally) and explain how it contributes to a topic, text, or issue under study.
Objective:
a. During the lesson, students will be able to identify the steps in the mummification process by
drawing out the steps individually in their own words and their own drawings
b. Students will gain knowledge of why the Ancient Egyptians practiced this ritual and why it was
so important to them and their religion through the lesson and peer discussion (think-pair-share,
answer out-loud)
Set:
How many of you can make an educated guess on what Mummification is? As you can all recall, we
looked over the religious aspects of the Ancient Egyptian culture yesterday and we ended the lesson with
a lingering questionHow do you think the Ancient Egyptians made it to the afterlife? What do you
think they believed in for the afterlife?
Input/Procedures (Modeling and Checking for Understanding):
1. Teacher will introduce the topic of Mummification.
2. Mummification Process Handout will be passed out and students are to fill it out as we learn
about the different steps of the mummification process from both the informational book and the
PowerPoint presentation
3. We will begin by talking about the basic information about the mummies. What is
mummification? We will learn what the ka is and what mummification was
4. We will go over the PowerPoint presentation and the book, learning and discussing what the
different steps the process of mummification paying attention to differences and new insights
from the book that the PowerPoint does not have
5. We will learn about natron and why this was so important to the Ancient Egyptians
6. Next, the embalmers will be introduced and their duties will be discussed
7. We will go through the slides in detail and analyze each step carefully as a whole, answering
questions as we go through the PowerPoint presentation
8. AS we learn different vocabulary words, the teacher will give the students time to process each
meaning and turn to a partner and share with them how they understood the vocabulary term and
put it in their own words
Guided Practice:

Students will be asked to follow along the lecture and fill out their chart titled Mummification Process,
then students are to fill in the vocabulary chart given to them in their own words for each of the terms.
After the presentation and discussion we will have as the lesson goes on, students will be able to
understand each term in the worksheet
Closure:
To close the lesson and check for understanding of the Mummification Process, students will be asked to
go over their Mummification Process Chart and go back to the Vocabulary worksheet and fill out the
terms they have learned through the reading of the book and the PowerPoint presentation that was
presented to them
Assessment Plan/Independent Practice:
The assessment part of this will be done through verbal interactions throughout the lesson. I will be
stopping to ask students questions on the vocabulary terms they have learned as we go through the lesson.
Also, the last activity where I will ask for students to fill out the vocabulary worksheet will show their
understanding of the lesson given.
Adaptations/Modification for ELD Student:
Speaking clearly and repeating the instructions more than once will be key details for teaching the ELD
population in the classroom. Also giving them appropriate time will be helpful for them to process the
information as we go through the lesson. The pictures in the PowerPoint are a great way to induce realia
into the lesson and make it very easy to comprehend for those students who are ELs and even those who
are visual learners. The vocabulary worksheet is also a good way to help the EL population gain and
understand the new vocabulary that will be learned.
