Curriculum Outline

Year 1 Term 2
We are really looking forward to our new topic
this term
Carnival of the Animals!

Dear Parents,

Please see attached the curriculum outline for the next term.
This term we will be studying the Carnival of the animals working towards the Brazilian carnival!
Just like last term we will be collecting marbles and house points to hopefully receive lots of certificates and marble
awards! We are starting afresh with our marbles and house points, so everyone starts with 0 house points! Completing

your homework challenges over the holidays will really give those charts a boost!

Literacy
In Literacy we will be focusing on the text Giraffes cant Dance. We will be completing a 4 week unit resulting in the children writing their own story based on the
book. This term we will really be focusing on full stops, capital letters, finger spaces and specifically the use adjectives and nouns. Focusing on these areas will really
help the children write in a more complex way. In phonics we will be continuing to learn our sounds and applying them to reading and writing.
Numeracy
In Numeracy we will be learning some multiplication facts, as well as addition and subtraction, using a number line and 100 square. We will also be looking at 2D and
3D shapes, being able to name them and describe their properties.
Topic (Geography, History, Science, ICT)
In Science, we will be looking closely at animals. We will be focusing on their different habitats, classifying groups of animals and learning the differences and
similarities between the groups. The main focus of our topic lessons for the next term will be Art and developing their drawing and painting skills. We will be looking
at the famous artist Henry Rousseau as he is very well known for his animal paintings.

SPECIALIST LESSONS
Portuguese
During term two, Year 1 children will explore three different topics within Portuguese lessons: Summer in the beach, Farm and Ziraldos stories (Brazilian famous author). For PFL
(Portuguese as a Foreign Language) children, we will be focusing on basic vocabulary and language skills to enhance communication in Portuguese. For Brazilian children and foreigners
who speak Portuguese, they will cover objectives taken from the Brazilian National Curriculum (MEC) which includes exploring more sophisticated vocabulary and encouraged children to
participate in discussion which will involve expressing ideas and opinions related to the topic.
Physical Education
Athletics Concentrates on developing good basic running, jumping and throwing techniques. They are set challenges for distance and time that involve using different styles and
combinations of running, jumping and throwing. As in all athletic activities, children think about how to achieve the greatest possible speed, height, distance or accuracy.
Swimming - Children will have the opportunity to build confidence in a swimming pool, become aware of safety measures and how important they are; learn some survival skills in the
water and improve travelling techniques with and without the use of water wings, learn personal survival techniques, play simple games and gain some basic knowledge in freestyle stroke
skills.

Music
The children will be learning about pulse and rhythm. They will be practicing that on a variety of percussion instruments and through different kinds of songs. They will also be
exploring pitch. They will be learning how to control their own pitch and explore pitches in different songs and instruments.
