MATERIALS:
Tomato Seeds
Sunflower Seeds
Back Eyed Pea Seeds
Soil
Paper cups
Water
Ruler
Pencil
Think Sheet
Computer with Excel
BACKGROUNDandRATIONALE:
The students will create a spreadsheet for the heights of three different plants grown in a given
time period.
The students will use word processing to answer questions about the different heights of plants
that are grown.
PROCEDURESANDTIMELINE:
Introduction: We know that some plants grow faster than others. We will take three different
types of seeds and plant the seeds in soil. We will water each seed every other day with five
milliliters of water. On days 10 and 20, we will measure the plants to find out the lengths. Which
plant grows the fastest?
Procedures:
The students will grow three different plants: black eyed pea, tomato, and sunflowers.
The students will use a spreadsheet to determine the average growth of the three plants.
The students will use a spreadsheet to determine the growth of the three plants after 10
and 20 days.
The students will use word processing to edit and revise the results. The student will also
answer questions about the different growths of plants.
The final products will be a spreadsheet with the different heights of the plants and a word
document that will include a discussion of the results and the answer to questions about the
different growths of plants.
The computer tasks will be divided between the group members:
Create rows and columns
Enter data from the experiment
Use formulas to calculate the average and sum
Create a graph that shows the heights of the different plants
The students will divide the tasks between the group members
The students will grow the three different plants and collect the lengths
The students will gather the data needed for the spreadsheet
The student will brainstorm on how to set up the spreadsheet
The students will discuss the results of the graph
The students will answer the questions on the Think Sheet in the groups
The students will discuss their findings

Closure:
Show the end products of what each plant product
Look at the nutritional value for tomatoes and peas
Look at the different uses of sunflower seeds

ASSESSMENTEVIDENCE:
The following will be assessed:
Spreadsheet
Columns and rows properly labeled
Data is input correctly
Formulas are properly used
Graph
Displays information from the experiment
The appropriate type of graph is used
Complete the handout questions
The questions will reflect information found on the spreadsheet.
