Welcome To Your Experiential Learning Experience

Congratulations! You have begun an exciting process of getting real-word
experience while you earn academic credit. The experience will hopefully be a great
learning experience now and will continue to be valuable to you as you pursue
future career goals.
There are several benefits to your academic internship. They include:
Documented experiential learning experience on your transcript
Guided experience by faculty or staff advisor
Opportunity for reflection of your experience
Application of classroom learning in a real-world setting
As your faculty advisor, I will be available for questions regarding your
experience, discussion about your learning opportunities, as well as the evaluation
of your experience. Here are the steps required to pursue your academic internship:
1) Complete the FCBE Internship ContractFor the learning contract, please
use the form provided for your learning goals, strategies, and evaluation
methods. Receive your permit for the course. This course is like any other
course in your major and will be graded on a letter grade basis (A, B, C, D,
etc). Be sure that you have activated your permit and are registered
confirm this by checking your MyMemphis account and be sure this course is
on your semester list of classes.
2) Develop your schedule with your internship site supervisor. This
schedule should be a mutually agreed upon schedule. Remember that you
must complete 150 hours within the semester. A time log is attachedkeep

it updated daily (or when you report to your site). Be sure to get your site
supervisor to confirm you hours are accurate. This is due with your
internship portfolio packet.
3) Think about your internship in terms of learning. With your faculty
internship advisor, develop your learning goals, your strategies, and your
overall evaluation methods of what you accomplish during your internship.
Complete the form enclosed in this packet. This is the foundation of the rest
of your portfolio. Review your learning goals with your site supervisor so
they can assist in your learning goals as well.
4) Review the Professional Development opportunities through the Avron
B. Fogelman Professional Development Center-Think about your
upcoming opportunitywhat preparation do you need in order to start your
experience successfully? Participate in at least one of these activities this
semester during your internship. Seek to complete the Professional
Development Certificate to enhance your rsum and your readiness for your
upcoming career.
5) Review the Portfolio Requirements below. Start with this process as you
start your internshipjournal, take photos, keep samples of your work. All
of these steps will make your portfolio much easier to prepare at the end.
Academic Internship Portfolio
Experiential learning is most successful when the actual internship includes
thoughtful reflection of the experience. Use the following portfolio guideline to help
you develop your reflection of your experience. In addition, your portfolio will

become a great interview asset for your future interviewsemployers like to see
what youve done and this is a great visual aid for your interview. There are three
sections to your portfolio:
a) Career Development Section
c) Evaluation of Work

b) Internship Reflection Section

d) Supporting Documents of Project Work

Please review the descriptions for each area. Make this portfolio a strong reflection
of your experience that can later be used to demonstrate your internship success to
other employers with future opportunities. Employers like to see what youve
done and your portfolio can help to describe your experience and your
qualifications for new opportunities.
Career Development Section
Career Assessmentsgo to the Focus 2 assessments online at
www.memphis.edu/careerservices. Take the 4 different assessments involving
personality strengths, career assessments, and interests. Copy those and include in
your portfolio. Summarize the five top career paths this assessment recommends
for you. Print only the summary forms of these assessment, the Work Interest
Survey is a good visual to help you understand your personality in connection with
your career goals.
Updated RsumYour rsum should be both professional in appearance
and updated with your internship experience. Go to the Career Corner at
www.memphis.edu/fcbe and use one of the formats there to help you craft your
rsum professionally. Be sure to ask for a letter of reference from your internship
site supervisor at the end. Include a copy of this in your portfolio. Review the use

of an electronic portfolio at www.weebly.com as an additional option for the review

of your experience. Incorporate a link to your weebly on your rsum.
Internship Reflection Section
Website ReviewPrint off key pages of your internship sites webpage. Review
this website before you start your internship. Write a 2-3 paragraph description of
your sitewhat is their mission? Who is their target audience or customer base?
What do they do for their customers or constituents? If your internship site is a forprofit company, who are their competitors? Researching your internship site prior
to your internship is an excellent step in becoming more knowledgeable of and
engaged with the organization.
Internship SummaryWrite a 4-5 page review of your experience including: what
you accomplished, additional skills you gained (time management, office etiquette,
teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, communication). Include relationships you
developed, observations of the site that impressed you or impacted you, and
coursework that you applied in your internship (courses you previously
completedlist courses by name/number). Identify what you accomplished in your
responsibilities. Include a copy of your internship description and identify the
results you accomplished. This step of the portfolio will help you enhance your
writing skills, which is one of the top requirements by employers today so work
hard to present your thoughts clearly, concisely, and correctly.
Samples of WorkInclude as many samples of work as possible. Check with your
internship site supervisor to be sure that they are not confidential in nature or
proprietary. Where possible, take photos of your work area, work products, and

individuals from your site. Future employers will want to see project work
resultshow can you demonstrate what you have accomplished in this to future
internship/job employers? Think of your internship projects as class projects that
will help you meet future career goals.
Electronic PortfolioSo that you can build upon this experience, develop an
electronic portfolio through weebly.com. This software is a very user-friendly
website where you can describe your projects and demonstrate your projects from
your internships. You can continue to add to this once the internship is over as well.
Oon your updated rsum, you will list a link as well to your weebly. Youll be able
to share much more about your strengths and abilities to future employers via this
option.
Internship PresentationSome employers require their interns to present what
they have learned to their management. If so, please submit a copy of your
presentation with your portfolio. If possible, I would like to attend this presentation
as well. If you are not required at the workplace to present, I would like you to
develop a PowerPoint or Prezzi presentation so that you can showcase your
presentation to me and other faculty. This step will help you sharpen your
presentation skills and will help us know how to help you further in your career
search.
Professional DevelopmentAttend at least one of the Professional Development
events offered during the semester through the Avron B. Fogelman Professional
Development Center. I highly encourage you to earn your Professional

Development Certificate. More information can be found at

www.memphis.edu/fcbe or by visiting room 274.
Additionally, through the semester, I will have some reading assignments for you as
well.
Evaluation of Work
A mid-term evaluation will be required for your internship. This evaluation
form is included in your internship packet. You will complete one as well and your
supervisor will complete on as well. Turn these into me, mid-term. Include a hard
copy as well in your portfolio.
A final evaluation will be required for you at the end when the work is
completed. Your site supervisor should complete one as well. This evaluation is
also in your this packet. Email this to me and include a hard copy in your
portfolio.
For both of these forms, download from this packet and typeit is much
more professional and will be more impressive later on for your future interviews.
It is your responsibility to download the forms and email to your site supervisor.
Be sure that you schedule a meeting with your supervisor to discuss each
evaluation. Particularly with the mid-term, this gives you a chance to make
some adjustments if he or she feels you need to do so.
Your completed work log is importantwhen your internship is over, be
sure your hours tally to 150 clock hours (for 3 hours credit).

Submission
When complete, review your work. Type all documents you create and place into a
3-ring binder with all the documents outlined above. Turn into me for grading at
the end of the academic term.
Documents To Include:
a) Completed time logsigned by Site Supervisor
b) Midterm EvaluationsSite Supervisor and Intern versions, completed (email
these to me at mid-term).
c) Final EvaluationsSite Supervisor and Intern versions, completed
d) Faculty Evaluation
e) Internship Learning Goals
Questions? Please let me know. Please email me at K.Tuberville@memphis.edu or
call 901-678-2222.

Learning Goals
At the onset of your internship, review the goals of your internship as well as your
strategies for achieving those goals and the evaluation methods of the internship
site supervisor regarding your performance.
The attached form will help you to format your goalsthis will also help you direct
your time toward those activities. If your responsibilities change, add new goals so
that at the end of your internship, your assessment will be complete with all that
you accomplished.
