This year The University of Texas at El Paso is celebrating 100 years since it first
opened the doors. This is an important event so the people in the community can learn a
about the history that UTEP has gathered over the past century as the leading academic
institution in El Paso Texas. It is of great importance to both the community and students to
know the reasons for the celebration. The genre types that I picked were News paper
articles and Government websites, UTEP celebrates 100 years of history from El Paso
Times written by Jenn Crawford, Fifth wall of giants: UTEP centennial celebration, from
mines to minds and Circle of giants news, both found at El Paso Texas County
Government website. I chose this genres because they are they are common and people are
relate or link to it. Besides I believe that they have the most information. These sources
give information about The University of Texas at El Paso background and also the special
events taking place during centennial celebration. The purpose of this paper is to examine
which of the two genres (newspaper article and government websites) is more explanatory.
I argue that the newspaper article is more informative and precise than the government
websites because the government websites does not convey knowledge like the newspaper
article does.
Every time when an author is writing an article they use different ways to make it or to
achieve the comprehension and interest of your audience or readers. The authors intended
audience of the Newspaper article is the community of El Paso. For example UTEPs past,
current and future students, parents and community in general. The purpose of this article is
to inform the community about the centennial celebration and also to share a little
background stories and information of the University. What links the audience with this
article is that they are convince by reading about positive things of the University of Texas
El Paso that makes them feel satisfaction of having UTEP in their community. In this
article the public learns about traditions at the campus. The time it takes the audience to
understand content is minimal it is an easy reading and not long, the language is appropriate
it is written in formal language but easy to understand for all audiences.
The government websites expected audience is also the community in general but
mostly for families. The objective is to majorly persuade people to attend to the centennial
celebration activities in town and to give a short story of the University. The audience is
being invited by the city government to enjoy and join the recreational activities. The
public of this specific genre wants to know where these events are happening and when.
The information of this website article is very short so it is easy to understand. This is a
Formal article so they use vocabulary or words with reference to the University. The
newspaper and the government websites relationship is they are both try to communicate to
the public the centennial celebration and the history of UTEP. The difference of the
information the news paper is that it gives more informative about the history and the
Government website says more about the celebration.
The newspaper genre provides information of more credibility but the information given
is also very precise. The newspaper interviewed the president of The University of Texas at
El Paso, Diana Natalicio, I believe that she being the president of the university and giving
her opinion, gives the newspaper more effective credibility. Other thing is that El Paso
times are a newspaper that has been part of the El Paso community for years so that
increases the credibility in the public is El Paso is the oldest newspaper in el Paso and has
maintain as an important communications medium. The article creates a connection with
the emotions of the readers by the details of all the years of the past century. People can
connect with the emotions, for example ex-students remembering when they were students
at the university can feel proud of all the years UTEP has serve to the community. The
Whenever you think of a government website you imagine a very informative page, well
in my case think I expected more information on the government website, it was very
limited information given on page, and it was more about the celebration instead of sharing
more of the history of the university. I think that as a city El Paso should dedicate more to
the University and give more of background story to the most important school in the city.
at the moment of looking for a government website was difficult to find a government web
site dedicated to the subject, and there were only two pages were very small and with very
little and information. I decided to put both since they were related and together to
complement and report more effectively on the subject. Either way the information on the
website article I founded to be good material. The greatest difference was how they inform
society; I think it's more likely that people will read a newspaper than a Web site. More
people of different ages read the newspaper and the website has less people coming to visit
the website of the city government. Other detail that differences this two genres is that the
newspaper is involve with the community while that government website might be concern
on other things. I think it makes the newspaper more efficient and connect more with the
audience.
To conclude the government website should expand more their way of communicating
in order to keep the community informed. In this case the most effective genre would be or
is the newspaper, It is a mass media of information because it reaches all levels of society,
all classes regardless of age or gender The paper also serves to inform, raise awareness of
current events-news, and is renewed day by day, provides more information about what is
happening in their community, The newspaper is a clear language, easy to understand,
allowing the reader to enjoy.
