Enzyme Notes

Chemical reactions either release or absorb energy when bonds

form or break.
Law of Conservation of Energy
o Energy is not created or destroyed but changes
forms
Activation Energy - the energy needed to get a reaction started
Catalyst a substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical
reaction
Enyzme specialized protein that acts as a biological catalyst

Enzymes end in -ase

* Example: Lipase

Enzymes are very specific and usually only have one (1) job.

enzyme

The key (substrate) fits into the lock (enzyme) and will stay
bonded until the reaction is complete.
The substrate is released and will then start the process over
when needed.
Factors affecting enzymes:
Denature
1. Temperature
changes shape or
2. pH value
breaks down enzyme
3. Inhibitor
* slows down or stops activity of the enzyme
