Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) 1933

Theenvironmentprogramput2.5millionunmarriedmentoworkfor
maintainingandrestoringforests,beaches,andparks.Workersearned
only$1adaybutreceivedfreeboardandjobtraining.From1934to
1937,thisprogramfundedsimilarprogramsfor8,500women.The
programplantednearly3billionstreesandconstructedmorethan800
parks.TheCCCtaughtthemenandwomenofAmericahowtolive
independently,thus,increasingtheirselfesteem.

Agriculture Adjustment Administration (AAA) 1933

TheAAAtriedtoraisefarmprices.Itusedproceedsfromanewtaxtopay
farmersnottoraisespecificcropsandanimals.Lowerproductionwould,
inturn,increaseprices.Farmerskilledoffcertainanimalsandcropsas
theyweretoldtobytheAAA.Manycouldnotbelievethatthefederal
governmentwascondoningsuchanactionwhenmanyAmericanswere
starving.Thiswasdeclaredunconstitutionallateron.

3. National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) 1933

Thedeclineintheindustrialpricesin1930scausedbusinessfailuresand
unemployment.TheNIRAwasformedinordertoboostthedeclining
prices,helpingbusinessesandworkers.TheNIRAalsoallowedtrade
associationsinmanyindustriestowritecodesregulatingwages,working
conditions,production,andprices.Italsosetaminimumwage.Thecodes
stoppedthetailspinofpricesforashorttime,butsoon,whenhigher
wageswentintoeffect,pricesrosetoo.Thus,consumersstoppedbuying.
Thecontinuouscycleofoverproductionandunderconsumptionput
businessesbackintoaslump.Somebusinessesfeltthatthecodeswere
toocomplicatedandtheNRAwastoorigid.Itwasdeclared
unconstitutionallateron.

4. Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) 1934

TheFederalDepositInsuranceCorporation(FDIC)wasformedby
Congresstoinsuredepositsupto$2500.Insuredinstitutionsarerequired
toplacesignsattheirplaceofbusinessstatingthat"depositsarebacked
bythefullfaithandcreditoftheUnitedStatesGovernment."Sincethe
startofFDICinsuranceonJanuary1,1934,nodepositorhaslostasingle
centofinsuredfundsasaresultofafailure.

5. Works Progress Administration (WPA) 1935

Thisagencyprovidedworkfor8millionAmericansandattemptedto
decreaseunemployment.TheWPAconstructedorrepairedschools,
hospitals,airfields,etc.WPAhademployedmorethan8,500,000different
personson1,410,000individualprojects,andhadspentabout$11billion.
Duringits8yearhistory,theWPAbuilt651,087milesofhighways,roads,
andstreetsandconstructed,repaired,orimproved124,031bridges,
125,110publicbuildings,8,192parks,and853airportlandingfields.

6. Social Security Act (SSA) 1935

Thisactestablishedasystemthatprovidedoldagepensionsforworkers,
survivorsbenefitsforvictimsofindustrialaccidents,unemployment
insurance,andaidfordependentmothersandchildren,theblindand
physicallydisabled.AlthoughtheoriginalSSAdidnotcoverfarmand
domesticworkers,itdidhelpmillionsofAmericansfeelmoresecure.
