The Office of Multicultural Programs

Established in 1993, the Office of Multicultural Programs strives to serve Maryville
University students, otherwise underrepresented, with social and academic distinction.
Our mission is to encourage and guide students of every race, gender, and unique
background through their higher education career. Students involved with the Office
of Multicultural Programs transition from high school to college and on to graduation
with meaningful cultural programs. Our mission is to find ways for students to gain
relevant experience and understanding of the world around them by first seeking the
contemporary needs, interests and potential within themselves. This is accomplished
through engaging campus programs and workshops.
To mold these multicultural students into exceptional young professionals we have
adopted Shaun Harpers Tri-Sector Model of Cultural Practice:
o Cultural Education
Cultural education programs allow students to interact with the critical knowledge
needed to fully understand and focus on the history, practices, and infrastructure
of various cultures. Lectures, panels, and brown bag discussions have been typical
offerings.
o Cultural Engagement
These social programs typically include performances, entertainment, and social interaction activities. Festivals, multi-ethnic luncheons, and performance troupes are
examples of cultural engagement programs.
o Cultural Development
These programs address holistic development of students, with particular attention
to how culture affects leadership, professional orientation, and wellness. They also
make important contributions to student understanding, connectedness, and ethos
toward their personal cultures and communities.
In addition to the various cultural programming opportunities found on campus, the
Office of Multicultural Programs features programs that emphasis peer mentorship
and the benefits of creating strong connections to the Maryville University campus and
community. Some of the programs that students can engage themselves in are: Nia
Kuumba (Center of Spirituality for African/African American Women); Sista 2 Sista; Peer
Mentoring Program, Multicultural Scholars Program and various cultural events within
the St. Louis community throughout the year.
The Office of Multicultural Programs is in the Donius University Center, room 105,
located in the Student Life Office. If you have questions or concerns, e-mail or call Christie
