1.

Create a chart showing the six air pollutants, causes, and concerns from the information
in the pre-lab.
Air pollutant
Ozone

Particulate Matter (PM)

Nitrogen Oxides

Sulfur Dioxide

Lead

Carbon Monoxide

Causes
Motor vehicle exhaust,
industrial emissions, gasoline
vapors and chemical solvents
(NO and VOC help form
ozone) sunlight and hot
weather cause ground level
ozone to form in harmful
concentrations in the air
Directly emitted particles into
the air such as cars, trucks,
buses, factories, construction
sites, tilled fields, unpaved
roads, stone crushing, and
burning of wood
Fuel burned at high
temperatures, motor vehicles,
electric utilities,
industrial/commercial/ and
residential sources of burned
fuels

Industrial facilities that derive

their products from raw
materials like metallic ore, coal
and crude oil, or that burn coal
or oil to produce process heat.
Examples include: large ships,
cement manufacturing
Motor vehicles, and industrial
sources, metals processing,
near lead smelters, stationary
sources- waste incinerators,
utilities and lead-acid battery
manufactures
Carbon in fuel that is not
burned completely, vehicle
exhaust, construction
equipment, boats, industrial
processes, forest fires

Concerns
Irritated lung airways,
inflammation, wheezing,
coughing, pain when
breathing, breathing
difficulties while exercising
plants become vulnerable to
diseases, pests and harsh
weather
Aggravated asthma, chronic
bronchitis, decreased lung
function, reduced visibility
(haze), nutrient depletion,
damaging crops, soot
Ground level ozone (smog),
lung tissue damage, ozone
transported in the wind,
formation of acid rain,
damaged vegetation, reduced
crop yields, visibility
impairment, toxic chemicals,
global warming and water
quality deterioration
Breathing difficulty, heart
disease, premature death,
haze, reduced visibility,
formation of acid rain, decay
on building

Damaged organs, kidneys,

liver, brain and nerve damage,
heart disease, high blood
pressure, memory problems,
osteoporosis
Cardiovascular effects, central
nervous system effects and
smog

2. Why is ground level ozone highest in the summer and almost nonexistent in the winter?
How might this affect our results as we test the air during this part of the year?
Ground- level ozone is highest in the summer and almost nonexistent in the
winter because nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds react to form
ozone in the presence of heat or sunlight. During summer, the level of ozone
is highest so collecting data during these months would not be including all
possibilities.
3. Many third world countries still use leaded gasoline (since they have older cars or since
they have not forced changes). What concerns may the governments of these countries
need to deal with?
There are many health concerns resulting from the use of leaded gasoline.
Lead levels in children are most likely high in a third world country using
leaded gasoline. Many children and even other people can suffer from lead
poisoning, nerve damage, anemia or even mental retardation. Fetuses and
children are most susceptible.
4. Use the internet to find what parts of North Carolina are not in compliance with the
Standards of the Clean Air Act. You may give either general areas or specific counties.
Mecklenburg County, Catawba County, Davidson County
