Dear third period

It is your responsibility to study for the
upcoming exams and one of the best ways to
study is to form and pretest. It is up to you,
third period to contribute to this outline even
if it is just a comment or change. If everyone
contributes, it is guaranteed that this exam
will pass with more ease than previous classes.

These are the rules1.Choose Two subtopics to work on. If more than one
person wants the same subtopic, they may or may not get
to work on it together. It depends on how large the
subtopic is.
2. Each person needs to contribute 5-10 QUALITY
questions
3. All questions due by the morning December 5th(a
Friday)

Physical and Chemical Properties and

Changes ANSWERS
Roshni
1.

What is the difference between a chemical change and a physical change?

A chemical change changes the intrinsic properties of a substance and a physical change changes the
outside of a substance (or appearance).
1. Bob had just cleaned the magnetic iron bell outside of her house. About 3 days later she finds out that the bell
has rust all over it.
a. What is one physical property of matter of the bell?
It is metal, dense, shiny
b. What is one chemical property of matter of the bell?
When the iron in it combines with oxygen, it makes rust
3. Sarah poured acid on a solid and it created a dent on the solid. Would this be a physical or chemical change?
Physical change
4. What would need to happen with the acid and the solid for the other kind of change to take place?
For there to be a chemical change the acid would have needed to turn the solid into a whole different
thing.
5. Chris has some clay. He leaves it out in the sun and it turns into a liquid. Is this a physical or chemical change?
Explain.
Physical change because it is not changing the inside it is just changing the form.

Elements, Compounds, mixtures

Clara
Questions:
1.What are the 3 properties of mixtures?
2.Which is an impure substances and which is pure?
3. Are compounds homogenous or heterogeneous and why?
4.List some examples of a mixture(food related).
5. Would a pizza be an example of a mixture or a
compound? Explain.

Elements, Compounds, MixturesANSWERS

Clara
ANSWERS
1.What are the 3 properties of mixtures?
easily separated, keep properties, physically combined
2.Which is an impure substances and which is pure?
E- pure C-pure M-impure
3.Are compounds homogenous or heterogeneous and why?
homogenous because they are chemically combined,
therefore they are only one matter, and pure.

Elements, Compounds, MixturesANSWERS

Clara
Answers cont.
4.List some examples of a mixture(food related).
cereal, crunch bar, bag of m&ms, snickers...etc
5.Would a pizza be an example of a mixture or a
compound? Explain.
Mixture since you can take apart, separating each part
and each part of the pizza keeps its own properties

Forces in the atom

Sydney

Strong force- keeps the protons from repelling

each other failure is an alpha decay
Weak force-keeping a neutron a neutron
(wants to be proton and electron) beta decay
Electromagnetic- causing nucleus to attract
the electrons

Forces cont.

Sydney

The neutron is constantly sending its electron

to a nearby proton and becoming a proton.
the proton that receives an electron becomes
a neutron. This happens millions of times a
second. However, when the weak force fails
and an electron is not caught, it becomes a
high-speed valence e- and BETA DECAY occurs

Beta Decay

Sydney

When a high-speed valence e- is shot out, a

neutron becomes a proton. Therefore, the
mass does not change, but the atomic number
increases by one. This is a type of radiation.

Alpha decay

Sydney

This occurs when the nucleus of the atom

gives off a helium nucleus, or two protons and
two neutrons. Therefore, the atomic number
decreases by two and the weight decreases by
four amu. This is a failure of the strong force.
*tip for remembering: alpha wolves are the
strongest wolves in the pack. Alpha decay is a
failure of the strong force

Radiation

Sydney

When an atom is not stable, it will try to make

itself into a more stable atom by radioactive
decay. An atom is unstable when there are too
few neutrons or too many neutrons. When the
ratio of protons to neutrons is not correct, the
atom becomes radioactive.

Practice problems

Syd

1. Polonium(Po) undergoes 2 failures of strong

force and 1 failure of the weak force. What
is left?
2. The above element is added to As and He.
What forms?
3. Rn has a half life of 10 days. How much is
left after 30?

Practice cont.

Syd

4. Radium undergoes an alpha decay. What do

I have now?
5. This undergoes a failure of the weak force.
What happens and what forms?

Concentration

Cody

- Concentration is the amount of a substance

per defined space. Concentration usually is
expressed in terms of mass (grams) per unit
volume.
- Standard concentration is mass per
1000 mL/1 liter

Concentration
620 grams of B2(SO4)3
1. Standard concentration
2. Concentration if added to 2 liters of water
3. Standard concentration if there were 300 grams
400 grams of KMnO4
4. Standard Concentration
