DOGAN, B. & ALMUS, K. (2014). School Administrators Use of iPads: Impact of

Training and Attitudes Toward School Use. Computers in the Schools, 31(3), 233-250.
INTRODUCTION
Research Questions (if research questions are not specifically mentioned, what is
the theoretical background or overarching theme):

As the principals are expected to be technology leader in the campus, are they using
technology effectively for administrative tasks? Do they receive sufficient training to
reach that goal? Does it have impact on their professional life? When they receive
training, does it change their attitudes toward technology, particularly toward Ipad?

Purpose of the research:

There is a need to see how administrators use IPad and its potential effects on their work
life. Also it was intended to measure the effects of training received for IPad use.
METHODOLOGY
What is the methodology for the research or approach used to understand the
issue? Provide information regarding the following:

Participants:
Principals and Assistant Principals working in elementary and middle schools in the southwest of
US participated in the survey.

Procedures:
It was a voluntary to participate and it is required that administrators be using IPad
provided by the school district. After getting approval school district and university board
administers were informed about the purpose, structure and schedule of the study. 51 of
them (30 male and 21 female) accepted to be volunteer.
Data Collection Methods/Data Source:
The study includes three stages; pre-survey, training session and post-survey. All study
was conducted February 2013 through May 2013.Surveys was conducted online.
Data Analysis:
The analysis for data of this study is mainly grouped in five categories.

1-Analysis of demographic and contextual data.

2-Impacts of the training process on school administrators use of iPad and iPad
applications.
3-Impacts of the training process on school administrators beliefs regarding how
teachers should use iPads in the classroom.
4-Differences in participants responses by their demographic and contextual data .
5- Evaluation of training process.
RESULTS
Findings or Results (or main points of the article):

1-The majority of administrators (66.67%) use educational applications like Eduphoria

on the IPad.
2-After the trainings administrators responded that they improved their skills on IPad use.
3-On the post-survey the majority (97.30%) of administrators gave opinion that they
would like to see teachers use IPad in the classroom.
4-The study supports the idea that the younger school administrators are the more they
use technology in the schools (Afshari et al., 2010; Schiller, 2003).
DISCUSSIONS
Conclusions/Implications (for your profession):

1-The principals are expected to be technology leader in the campus and implement new
technologies in the campus (Dawson &Rakes, 2003; Lashway, 2002; McLeod, 2008)
their training is very important to achieve this goal.
2- According to the results, school administrators in K5 reported their level of iPad
skills and knowledge higher than administrators of K8 and K12 schools. The writer
states that further research is needed to understand facts behind this interesting fact.
REFLECTIONS
Students Reflections (changes to your understanding; implications for your
school/work):
Administrators should receive trainings on several areas to stay updated. Especially technology is one of
the areas which need yearly update. The most important reason why principals should be confident in them
on technology and be technology leader at campus is that the more teachers involve technology in
instruction the more effective learning will be ensured at school which will impact on campus academic
results. There are a lot of schools providing iPad or smartphones for staff members. But unfortunately there
is not provided sufficient training to involve those devices in their teaching activities. Principals are the
ones who might know the needs at campus level.
