LESSON 1
Collection through the mind

LESSON 1: COLLECTION
THROUGH THE MIND
In this lesson students will first be introduced to their artist journals which will
be collected by me at the end of each lesson and at the end of the unit.
In this lesson we will be talking about collection through the mind, more

specifically how we collect memories over time.

Students will be working with water color and the technique of webbing to
create a foreground for their final piece. On top of this foreground students will be
drawing a memory or a group of memories that are important to them.

DAY 1: JOURNALS &

ARTISTS
Introduce journals to the class
These will be used through the duration of all three lessons to be used as
a collection of their thoughts and will be collected at the end of the of
each lesson.

We will then look at three different artists and their water color work.
I will then ask the students what they noticed about each artists work:
What was similar, what was different?

DAY 2: DAY OF PLAY

Students will have watercolors set out on their tables when they get
to class.
Students will be able to experiment with the medium without any
constrains to that they may get acquainted with the medium.

DAY 3: INTRODUCTION
The final project will be introduced to the class (collection of
memoires)
Students will be asked to brainstorm in their journals and keep the

fallowing questions in mind:

What is collection
What do people collect? What do you collect?
Is collecting only a physical act?
What are memories?
How do/can we collect memoires?
What memoires are important to you

DAY 3: CONTINUED
I will demo the technique we will be
using for the final project (webbing) and
how to set it up

The concept of webbing is to have

certain parts of the paper to create
a defined design.

Students will then set up their

webbing for the next class

and how to write them.

DAY 10: ARTIST

STATEMENTS
Student will be writing their artist statements
Then introduced to in class critiques and will be asked to think
about that they want to talk about in the class critique the next week
over the weekend.

What is your first impression of this work.

What works for this specific piece? What doesnt work?
What do you think the artist is trying to say with this piece?
What does the artist statement make you think of ?

DAY 11-12:IN CLASS

CRITIQUE
Students will post their work on the board for the whole class t see
and will be asked to participate in an in class critique (reminding
students to not be mean or rude about another persons work).
At the end of class students will be asked to fill out a self
evaluation form.
Self reflection will be used as an exit slip to leave class.

LESSON 2
The community as a collection

LESSON 2: COLLECTION OF
THE COMMUNITY
Students will be thinking about the community and how as a collection
they see the community.
In this lesson students will be making wind chimes made out of

objects they think represent the community.

Wind chimes are basically a collection of objects brought together to
make a beautiful sound or for decoration.
The wind chime is a communal object, it needs an outside force to

make sound (I.E. a person walking by).
