Professional Development Plan

Step I: Self-reflection
Marva Collins once said, "Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their
mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another. I
think that this quote is a prime example of what prospective teachers should aim to do. You
should want to teach your students how to learn, or a new way, and keep helping them learn new
things.

The purpose of education is . . .

o To help students become lifelong learners
o To help students become more socially adapt
o To help students grow and develop
o To create a positive learning environment
The role of the student in education is . . .
o
to be motivated about their learning
o to find some prior experience or knowledge to apply with their new knowledge to
o be active participants in their education
The role of the teacher in education is . . .
o To actively engage students in the learning process
o To create a warm and protective environment, yet also professional

To incorporate a sense of purpose proposed to encourage a child's social

development
I have decided to become a teacher for these reasons . . .
o To further students educations
o To make childrens learning experiences fun and enjoyable, yet meaningful and
educational
o To help students grow and develop into respectable adults

"Once children learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of
teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another." -- Marva Collins

Step II A. Description of School and Teaching,

Administrative, or Pupil Services Situation
Description of Position
I finished my pre-student teaching in Kindergarten at Southwestern Elementary School in Hazel
Green, WI.
Number of Years in Position
1 year
School Location/Setting
Southwestern School District is a rural school located in Hazel Green, Wisconsin. It is in the
very southwest corner of the state and is a K-12 school district.
Demographics
There are currently 337 students enrolled at Southwestern Elementary School. 96.2% are white,
are 1.9% African American, 1.6% are Hispanic, and 0.3% are Asian or Pacific Islander. 16.6% of
the students enrolled in the building have a disability. 42.8% of the students in the building are
economically disadvantaged. 25.9% are Free Lunch Program eligible and 15.9% are ReducedPrice Lunch Program eligible.
District Goals
The following are Southwestern Community School District goals in the 2013-2014 school year:
* Offer all students the opportunity to achieve an Excellent Education.
* Prepare students to be life-long learners through cooperation between staff, parents and
community.
* Graduate academically and socially well rounded students to be productive members of
society.
* Consider the long-range financial effect on the community.

Step II B. Description of Goal to be Addressed

Goal:
I will learn and implement new technologies into my classroom so that students will advance in
having their technological needs met and will be more adaptive to the ever-changing
technological world.

Step II C. Rationale for the Goal: Links to Professional

Situation and Wisconsin Educator Standards
Goal:
I will learn and implement new technologies into my classroom so that students will advance in
having their technological needs met and will be more adaptive to the ever-changing
technological world.
Rationale for your Goal:
Southwestern School District has embraced the use of technology in their classrooms and school
district. As an initial educator, I have been using many different types of technologies. Some of
these technologies are not evident in the elementary classrooms yet, and I would like to
incorporate them into my teaching.
I feel the use of technology in the classroom will foster growth and development in the students,
potentially even those with cognitive disabilities or behavioral issues. As the world continues to
change, technology becomes more and more available to younger students. I intend to
incorporate a variety of teaching strategies in order to identify what works best with the different
individuals in my classroom. The use of different instructional strategies to teach the students
about technology can help to encourage children's development of critical thinking, problem
solving, and performance skills. The lessons will be presented differently and on different topics
so that they adhere to different students and their learning styles.
Licensure standard(s) addressed in your plan:

Teacher:(3) The teacher understands how pupils differ in their approaches to learning
and the barriers that impede learning and can adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs
of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.

Teacher:(4) The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies,

including the use of technology to encourage children's development of critical thinking,
problem solving, and performance skills.
Teacher:(7) The teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon
knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community and curriculum goals.
Teacher:(8) The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies
to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the
pupil.

Step II D. Plan for Assessing and Documenting the Goal

Goal: I will learn and implement new technologies into my classroom so that students will
advance in having their technological needs met and will be more adaptive to the ever-changing
technological world.
I will assess my professional growth through:

Keeping a journal summarizing my learning experiences with technology..

Creating mini-lessons and completing written reflections of how I have changed my
teaching strategies and how I am modifying what I have learned.
Notes from observing and meeting with colleagues.

I will assess my students' progress through:

Student reflection journals noting attitude towards technology.

Daily observations.
Notes from weekly conferences with students.
Observations of the students in their morning meeting routine.
