Research Overview and Annotated Bibliography

Research Question
Since I have arrived at the University of Northern Iowa, I have encountered a few cases
of discrimination first hand. I am not the judgmental type of guy, but my experiences lead me to
wonder just how much discrimination occurs on a national scale. Racial, Ethnical and
discriminating against sexual orientation. I seek answers to better understand past and present
societys way of thinking with these issues and also to possibly avoid unnecessary
discrimination. This relates to my personal interests because it is something I myself have
experienced.
Research Process
Throughout the process of discovering information about discrimination I have found that
racial discrimination is among the most common of all types. That it is a very common
occurrence for one to go through some kind of discrimination in their life time. All of these
sources relate back to my person experience of discrimination because it all tells a story or gives
statistics or information about some kind of discrimination.
Annotated Bibliography

This book discusses that fundamental beliefs of any human being that they feel obligated
to have an equal opportunity to participate as a full and functional member of society.
Also it goes through and touches on that is isnt quite the way people would like because
of racial and ethnical discrimination. Telling that the prejudice habits our society has
hasnt went away over the years. This is a credible source. The title itself portrays the
right subject to relate to my personal encounters in life and reading some of it enlightens
me on a lot that can be changed and a lot that is going in.

In this article I discovered some alarming statistics along with a story. A homeless man
named Fat Vincent Winslow who was African American served as a go-between in a
drug deal. He was caught in this non-violent act and given life in prison without chance
of parole, in Louisiana African Americans are serving life in prison approximately 23
times the rate of whites. Nationwide, an estimated 65.4 percent of prisoners serving such
sentences are African American. This source is credible. It shows the depth of racial
discrimination, while also showing the confrontation of the issue on a larger scale as well.

opinion can change of another once they know they are gay.

they get jobs. These charts show the change of obesity and discrimination against them to
get jobs nationwide. It also shows their sex and race. This is a credible source to show
how diverse the subject is that not only ethical or racial but weight discrimination as well.

Sydney Morning Herald [Sydney, Australia] "NBA's response to bigotry proves value of
power." 5 May 2014: 17. Academic OneFile. Web. 20 Nov. 2014.
This Article discusses a racial incident that happened with NBA Basketball team owner
Donald Sterling. One of his conversations to his wife was recorded with him saying she
Shouldnt associate or bring black people to the basketball games. When the league
owners found out he was immediately banned from the business for life. The most useful
information displayed in this article is all the different political stand points of this issue.
Some saying you cant get rid of the discrimination by legislating away bigotry. This
helps me because it shows that wealthy, high up men like Donald Sterling who employ
blacks on his team still encouraged his wife to stay away from them.
"Video: Racial Discrimination." Local Broadcast Video Content 2 Dec. 2013. Academic
OneFile. Web. 20 Nov. 2014.
This video about racial discrimination on the job, reveals a situation where reported racial
discrimination played a part in an officers dismissal. The chief says that she allegedly
had a relationship with a drug dealer and that she disobeyed a direct order. She filed the
federal civil rights lawsuit. This source credible because it occurred in the city or Nenah,
a very small city and it shows that no matter how big or small the place may be it can
happen anywhere. It also seems credible because those this situation was an example of
discrimination she didnt get her way when she filed the federal civil rights lawsuit.
