Mole Day Project

Title/Theme: Mole Or Treat

Research:
Mole Number
o 6.02 x 10^23
o The Mole number was not created by Avogadro, but inspired by him.
o It is unit of measurement to determine the amount of a substance.
o Based from Carbon-12 which is 12 grams.
Example: 1 mole of copper has 6.022 x 1023 atoms and weighs about
63.54 grams.
Tribute to Avogadro and Cannizzaro (plus other chemists)
o Avogadro came up with the principle that equal volumes of gases at the
same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules.
o Using this principle Cannizzaro clarified the distinction between atoms and
molecules and by doing so, laid a solid foundation for the formulation of the
periodic law.
o Avogadro created his principle by basing it off of the Joseph-Louis GayLussac hypothesis in any chemical reaction involving gaseous substances
the volumes of the various gases reacting or produced are in the ratios of
small whole numbers.
o Mendeleev created the basis of the periodic table, using the idea that the
properties of elements are in periodic dependence based on their atomic
weight.
How the mole applies to periodicity in relation to the Periodic Table
o The mole is based off of periodic weights of elements. The atomic weight of
an element is equal to one mole of that element, and is equal to 6.02 x 10^23
atoms.
o Mendeleev was originally the creator of the periodic table in its simplest
forms, with the first known elements.

I began to look about and write down the elements with their atomic weights and
typical properties, analogous elements and like atomic weights on separate cards,
and this soon convinced me that the properties of elements are in periodic
dependence upon their atomic weights.

--Mendeleev, Principles of Chemistry, 1905, Vol. II

Significance of Mole Day to reinforce the Mole Concept

o Mole Day is used to get students, mostly, excited about chemistry and what
better way than Avogadros number?
o We look at it as 6.02 x 10^23. It is the number of atoms that all elements can
equal each other and share the title one mole, even though the atomic
weights are different.
o We look at it as every element is different, but they can all be equal in atoms
to share the same title, as if there is some kind of underlying metaphor. All
humans are different, but they still share the same title, human.

o Pumpkin Carving Tools
Methods:
Creating a detailed report of all of our research and information, as well as all of the
documentation that was involved for our project.
Forwarding this information onto a PowerPoint Presentation to present to the class
Having a pumpkin display to create a fun image for the class of the importance of
Mole Day and why it is celebrated.

o Discussing how we want to present project and divide up the roles to begin
on working on our part
10/17/2014 from 12:00pm-1:00pm
o Keeping track of progress of the project and making sure the roles are being
practiced

We promise to work together as a team and make sure that each other gets their
specific assignment completed. If we have an issue with one another, we do have
the right to take over that persons assignment and create it how we need it to be for
our project. We will have regular meet up times, being twice per week. These days
are:

10/15/2014 from 5:00pm-7:00pm

o Discussing how we want to present project and divide up the roles to begin
on working on our part
10/17/2014 from 12:00pm-1:00pm
o Keeping track of progress of the project and making sure the roles are being
practiced
10/19/2014 from 5:00pm-7:00pm
o Creating the Pumpkin Carving Creation
10/22/2014 from 3:00pm-4:00pm
o Finalizing Project and adding any final details on collaboration work

Throughout the duration of this project we have the goal as a group to complete the
project to the best of our ability. We want to cover all of the information needed to
completely understand The Mole Number and the significance of Mole Day. We plan
on completing a detailed report, a PowerPoint presentation, and then a pumpkin
presentation. This will be completed as a group but assigned to individuals to
manage these three requirements. With the completion of this project we plan to
make an A on the project and have the audiences attention throughout the duration
of the presentation of our project.
