Presentations (optional): May 1st

Introduction: What makes a story compelling? Better question what makes a text a story?
This assignment is an opportunity for students to create original and meaningful texts. This
assignment is composed of three parts, and will be richly influenced by your work on your
Research Logs. While students explore different types of genres they will be constructing
different genres that explore the overarching concept: What is war, and how am I affected by
it?
The assignment itself is the examples of genre, and you should devote the majority of your
energy to create these texts. That said, it would be really easy to construct three texts that deal
with this overarching concept, yet do not deal with each other. In addition to the three textual
examples of the multigenre (which I will explain in detail later) this assignment has three distinct
parts that must be completed to receive an A. The three parts are a Repetend, a Reflection and
Reference Page.
Texts: You must have a minimum of 3 texts from 3 different genres. Each text should be in
response to the research you did in your Research Logs. When I grade these projects, I will be
asking myself: Who created, and for whom was it created? I encourage you all to create texts
from imagined identities that are not you own. Perhaps you have a series of letters, or journal
entries, or newspaper articles that explain a story; the challenge as the student is to think what
you can do with the genre you have chosen, then determine what you want to say, and last keep
are particular audience in mind (is the text for small children, young adults, elderly)? In short
what is your message/story, how are you telling it, and to whom are you telling your message.
The message/story that you tell is up to you, but will likely be influenced by the texts you
encountered in your Research Logs. Make sure that the message/story is in response to the
guiding question for the unit: What is war, and how am I affected by it?
Lastly, you need a repeated genre to connect the main idea between the texts you have
constructed. This genre can be one that you have already explore, or you can have a fourth genre
to serve the purpose of connecting the text. I common example that I have seen is that students
use a fictional narrative to portray the significance of the text; I have also seen images serve this
purpose. This repeated genre is not to be confused with the Repetend.
I encourage you to think outside the box, and explore as many genres as you can find; this is why
I require you to have a least one multimodal genre in you research logs. The point is that texts
surround us in our daily lives, and each one is trying to give a message or tell a story.

If you would like to create videos, or audio files for you texts please see me and we can work
together to make that happen. I will grade these on how well they respond to the overarching
question and how much effort you put into the texts.
Repetend: Earlier I mention how easy it is to create three texts that explore this overarching
concept, yet lack a connection. The Repetend can be thought of as a word, a phrase, an object, a
character, a setting, an image, a sound, but not a genre. The Repetend clues the reader into
what is significant about your project. You should begin researching different genres right away,
but do not begin to create your texts until you have come up with a repetend that I have
confirmed. Your Repetend should be connected to some aspect about war, but does not
necessarily need to be imagined. For instance you could use Berlin, Germany, as your repetend
and every text you construct deals with Berlin in some way. Repetends should not be thought of
something that will restrict your creativity, but something you are passionate about and interested
in exploring through your texts. Repetends are due April 1st.
Reflection: The week before the texts are due I will give you a Reflection Guide. The guide
will have the following Questions; you should aim to answer all the questions:
What did you find most difficult about this project? What aspects of the project were you
uncertain about?
Describe a risk you took when constructing one of your texts? How does this text align
with other texts of the same genre? How does this text differ from the texts you
discovered in your research?
What did you learn through this project about war, and about yourself? Do you feel you
play a part in the war? If so, describe the part you play?
How is your project a response to your research? How well did you address the question:
What is war, and how does it affect me?

How do popular media sources portray war? How did these popular texts impact you
personally, how did they impact your project?
What is something you felt you did extremely well? Is there anything I should know
about any of your texts before I grade them?
What grade you feel you deserve on this project? You may cite work from you Repetend
Workshop, you Research Logs, or Texts. Do you have any final comments on this
project?

Reference Page: This portion of the project will be an continuation of the Research Logs. In
this section you must collect three sources that you believed played the greatest role in the
construction of your three texts. Each source should be properly cited in MLA format, and
following each source will be a brief response to the following questions:
Who created the text, and for whom was it created?
How does this text compare/contrast with other texts of that particular genre?
How did this source influence your research? How did this source influence your text.
I am not looking for more than five sentences for each response. I am more concerned that you
are using proper citation.

Requirements:
You must approve you repetend with me before constructing your texts. Repetends are
due April 1st, but we can conference before if you are eager to start.
You must have a minimum of three texts from three different genres. If you have to use a
genre more than once, that is fine. Your repetend must be evident in each text.
You must complete the Reflection. (Assigned: April 24th Due: May 1st)
You must complete the Reference Page. (Assigned: April 24th Due: May 1st)
You turn in all Workshop Forms (Due May 1st)
You turn in your Research Logs (Due May 1st)
To get an A on the Research Project: You must have three texts that explore the question:
What is war, and how am I affected by it? as well as represent you repetend in all three texts.
Your reflection shows that you thought about your message/story, how you tell it and to whom
you are telling it. Your reference page has three properly cited sources and three responses that
answer the three guiding questions. You were present and have completed all of the workshop
forms for the project. You Research Logs are thorough and complete.
