7TH Grade Health Class

Units of Study
Topics of discussion will include Stay Drug Free Today for A Successful Tomorrow, The Power is Yours,to
Be Tobacco Free, Growing Up and Staying Healthy: Understanding HIV and Other STIs, Gambling: All Bets
are Off, Sun Safety: Skin Cancer, and Choosing who I am- Choosing Who I Become- Character
Education. Officer Couzzins will also be joining us once a week for certain topics discussed in class that are
related to alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.
Materials Needed:
3 ring binder- Students will need to bring their 3 ring binder (I call this their note book) to class daily. Theyll
receive many handouts & worksheets & will be responsible for keeping track of these. There is not a text
book for this course, so there will be many handouts. Students will need to hand in their notebook at the end
of each unit for a grade and will also need to refer to these throughout the course to study for possible quizzes
& tests.
Classroom Expectations:
Health Class will include class discussions, partner & cooperative group activities on a daily basis. It is
crucial for every student to be involved and contribute their ideas and opinions in this class. I have stressed
this with the students, and have spent time discussing the need for respect of all student responses, so that
everyone will feel that they are in a comfortable & accepting atmosphere. Personal judgments of
contributions made during class discussions will not be made or tolerated! Health class will involve
some discussion on sensitive topics. I expect all discussions to be respectful.
Homework & Assignments:
-Many assignments will be worked on in class. Occasionally a student may need to finish work at home that
was begun in class. A reasonable amount of homework will be assigned. It will not be on a daily basis.
-All assignments are expected to be done by the unit notebook checks.
-Late work will receive reduced points.
Absences:
Students are responsible for the work and assignments they have missed when absent. Check with me or
look on the white board for any assignments you may have missed. Make-up work from illness or vacation is
due upon return. Students are to get the missing assignments from the back counter.
PAWS Panther Achieving Working Successfully) School Wide Program
Turning in homework at DeWitt Junior High is not a choice for our students, its an expectation. To help our
students become responsible in this area we have created the PAWS Program. This years PAWS Program will
be run after school only.
We believe it is the students responsibility to complete all assignments on time. If a student does not
complete an assignment on time he/she will attend a PAWS session the next school day. If a student does
not attend a PAWS session within three days of being referred, the assignment is removed from the PAWS list
and the student is referred to the assistant principal for a parent meeting where a homework completion plan
will be created.
