Beowulf the Ideal Hero
Beowulf is an ideal hero and king by fighting and winning battles against monstrous
enemies to protect his people. He faces three battles that prove that he is an ideal hero. The first
battle that he faces is the battle against Grendel, then he faces a battle against Grendels mother
who comes back for revenge, and then lastly a battle against a dragon.
Beowulf fights many battles. One battle in particular that Id like to address is the fight
against Grendel. Grendel is an evil person (they even acknowledge him as a monster) who lives
in swamplands of Hrothgars kingdom. He terrorizes the Danes for years. He even has a routine
where he kills some at least every night. Beowulf hears about whats been happening and decides
to go and travel all the way to Denmark with some of his men, mind set to save all of the Dane
people from fear and danger of Grendel. When Beowulf arrives he comes upon Wulfgar and is
asked what hes doing in the city. Beowulf tell Wulfgar that he must speak with the king.
Wulfgar delivers Beowulfs message and said that he knew of him when he was a young boy. He
also said that he has heard of Beowulfs tales of greatness.. In appreciation to Beowulf from the
king a feast was held in honor of Beowulfs volunteering to help the kings people.
As there feasting and having a food time someone comes to surprise Beowulf. What ends
up happening is that Grendel beats Beowulf to the punch and shows up to there feast. The fight
between Beowulf and Grendel starts there that night when he kills one of the Geat men. Grendel
tries to go after Beowulf next but he is already been grabbed. Beowulf tries to show that he is

stronger than Grendel by fighting him unarmed (with his bare hands).Grendel can not be
defeated by any kind of weapon and notices that he is no match for Beowulf. Grendel tries to run
and get away, but Beowulf defeats Grendel by tearing off his arms and letting his body die in the
swamp. They hang Grendels arms high on the mead-hall as a sigh of victory.
Believing that the fight is over Grendels mother comes back for revenge for the killing of
her son. She sees Heorot who is the kings best advisors, Aschere and ends up killing him. So
Beowulf dives into the swamp to go and find Grendels mother. Grendels mother already senses
that Beowulf is near and she approaches him. She drags Beowulf to her liar and whiles being
dragged a great amount of sea monsters claw and bite him. He fights Grendels mother with his
bare hands, but is not helpful.He finds a sword hanging on a wall that was made for giants. He
ends up succeeding Grendels mother by cutting her head off with a clean cut. Beowulf ends up
finding Grendels dead body and decapitate his head and brings it back as trophy to repay for the
lives that Grendel.
Beowulfs last and final fight proves that he was in fact a tremendous hero. He decided
that he was going to go and defeat the dragon alone. So he told his good byes to his men and
goes with only a helmet to go and fight the dragon. What Beowulf didnt know is that his men
went ahead and followed him to go and help him fight. When Beowulf gets there he notices his
men. The men end up getting scared of the dragon and run back home. Wiglaf was Beowulfs
only trusted men who didnt run back home, he stayed with him to help him defat the dragon.
Beowulf tries to charge and pierce the dragon but his sword failed him when the sword broke in
two. The dragon ends up biting Beowulf and poisons him Wiglaf ends up helping Beowulf kills
the dragon and finally gets to the treasure. Beowulf was laid to rest with the treasure that he
succeeded from defeating the dragon and is always remembered by the type of hero he was.

enemies to protect his people. His battles explain the passion that he put into the battles to really
stand up for innocent people rights and punishments.
