How did the Cold War affect Latin America? Why did the United States get involved?
Latin America had heartless rulers which were violent. The United States got involved because
the term communist meant evil which needed to be stopped.
What is the difference between left and right wing? And why is it confusing?
Left wing is mostly Liberals, who believe in programs that support health care and that they
should have a greater say in government. The right wing is known as conservatives, which is a
smaller group, which believe that the government should have less role in helping people.
Why did the United States get involved in Cuba?
The main product coming from Cuba was sugar which the US controlled. Then when Fidel
Castro overthrew Batistas government, Castro was communist so Cuba was an enemy of the
US. So then the US did not trade with Cuba or let citizens visit Cuba.
Whats banana republic?
A country that is controlled by a company for the main reason of producing and exporting goods.
They are not governed by a governed but by a company.
How did the CIA get involved in Guatemala?
The CIA got involved because Guatemala was a communist country and America is anticommunist and the CIA helped to overthrow Guzman in 1954.
What is the other infamous September 11th?
Pinochet overthrew the government in a military coup. Under the rule of Pinochet people
suffered human right violations and thousands of people were killed and tortured.
Who were the disappeared in Argentina?
Juan Peron took power after WW2. While his wife was popular and in the media. Juan supported
the dirty War the government sponsored killing over 30,000 people who opposed views. These
people were known as the disappeared.
Why was it controversial when the United States intervened in Nicaragua?
The United States supported anti-communist group called Contras. Reagan said he could no
longer support contras anymore but yet he still supplied weapons to them.
What violence occurred in Brazil and El Salvador?
Brazil turned to a dictatorship after the great depression then Getulio Vargas turned Brazil into a
fascist state. Civil war broke out between the left and right wing supporters. Over 75,000 people
were killed, it all ended in a peace treaty between the two sides in 1992. The USA supported the
right wing.

"If democracy is a goal of the L.A. nations, what does a nation have to have in order to
achieve this goal?"
Their first step towards a democracy is obtaining a leader who shows strong leadership skills,
knowledge in how to handle a lot of pressure and to make a quick intelligent decision. Another
very important trait is to not have a leader that is not communistic, nor and beliefs in any ideas of
communism. To become a successful democracy is to base their nation off of the United States.
We were the first true democratic nation in the world. It will take time for a nation to be where
they need to be, the nation need to heal and adjust to the new ways.
