Getting it done

Strong start sends

Lake City past Evart
cadillac news

LAKE CITY When they

did the things theyre good
at, everything was fine.
When they got away from
that, it was a struggle.
Lake City got off to a
great start, struggled in the
second quarter and eventually scored a 62-43 win over
Evart in a Highland Conference boys basketball game
Thursday night.
The Trojans were hot
from the start as they
pounded the ball inside at
will, getting the Wildcats
post players in early foul
trouble.
The game was tied 3-3 in
the early stages before Lake
City went on a 17-1 run to
close the first quarter.
We had a really good first
quarter and it seemed like
we were doing the stuff we
wanted to do, Lake City
coach Dale Eising said. We
were getting the ball inside.
When you get that lead
early like that, sometimes
you lose your intensity and
we did. Maybe we forgot
what we believe in and
thats playing inside-out. We
preach all the time about
offensive rebounds and we
didnt have any in the second quarter.
Give Evart credit, too,
they hit some buckets and
made a run.
Evart outscored Lake City
15-9 in the second quarter
to cut the deficit to 29-19 at
halftime.
The Trojans got back on
track, though, in the third
quarter and were up 50-35
going into the fourth.
I think the kids were
expecting me to go after
them at halftime but I said
I wasnt going to holler at
them because weve got a
10-point lead and we know
we can do things at them.
We just have to do them,
Eising said.
We did those things for
the most part in the third
quarter.
Drew Marion paced Lake
City with 21 points and

MANTON Little by little, they're getting the idea.

McBain took a step in the
right direction as it scored a
56-49 win over Manton in a
Highland Conference boys'
basketball game Thursday.
The Ramblers found a
way to get it down done the
stretch, something that had
been an Achilles' Heel up to
this point in the season.
"We're still having a hard
time buying into some
things but what won the
game for us was we locked
down defensively, ground it
out a little bit and then we
rebounded," McBain coach
Bruce Koopman said. "We
just need to learn to stay on
course a little bit more."
Manton led just 9-7 after
the first quarter before
McBain took a 19-16 lead
into the halftime break. The
two teams opened it up in
the third quarter and the
Ramblers led 41-33 going
into the fourth.
Manton coach Ryan Hiller said his team took a step
in the right direction, too.
"I thought we were competitive with them and it's
been a long time since that's
happened in the conference," he said. "We were
down two with 2:30 left, had
some opportunities but just
didn't execute.
"I thought we did a great
job early, too."
Cole Powell paced
McBain with 16 points
while Tyler Sterk scored 13

Kyle Heuker added five rebounds.
Wyatt Baker paced Manton with 24 points while Tyler Swing had 11 and Brock
