1.0 INTRODUCTION

In November 2014, in a group of four, we were assigned to conduct a research on

Original and Licensed Software as well as Computer and Internet Security. We divided the
topics to be covered equally among our members and started to go deeper into the context. We
collected most of our findings from reading through online journals and articles, as well as
scholarly works by experts to have an in-depth overview on the topics assigned to us.
As we are living through this ever-changing digital generation, there is a necessity for all
of us to understand the rhythm of the undying virtual world we see through our computers and
smartphones. One of the most crucial element to be thought of is the originality of software that
we use in our computers. In this report, we would highlight on the importance of using original
and licensed software and relate them to the evidently increasing number of cybercrimes. We
would also like to show the potential danger the users might face if they were to neglect the
originality of the software they possess.
Plus, we also made a small research on the most celebrated creation of mankind, the
Internet! Internet can be mesmerizing but nobody knows that it can be deceptive as well. We
would discover the underlying threats of Internet and the best measures to protect our computer
system from cybercrimes.

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

Original software basically means a provider of software testing products and services while
licensed software means software that allows an individual or group to use it and it is divided
into three categories; free software license, non free software license and commercial royalty
free.
Computer security are software that focuses on protecting information, hardware and software
from unauthorized use. It prevents damage from intrusions, sabotage and natural disasters. As to
internet security, it is a tree branch of computer security specifically related to the internet, often
involving browser security and also network security on a more general as it applies to other
applications or operating systems on a whole.

2.1 Benefits
The benefits of using original and licensed software are;
Avoiding piracy as running pirated software is a crime.
The software itself is virus-free as there would be any attached virus along with
the software.
Your data too, is secured as it is protected by the system.
It comes with warranty, if anything happens during the warranty time, the
company is responsible to fix it.
It is also beneficial as you are eligible to get special offers by the company.
The benefits of running computer and internet security;
Avoiding hackers from stealing your data.
Helps computer being virus free, thus escape the torture of lagged data and data
loss.
To secure personal data.

2.2 Who used it

People all around the world install original, licensed software and took measures for computer
and internet security as they fear that their personal data would be gone the minute they are
careless. The personal data could be used for something inappropriate without their consent.
3.0 OBJECTIVES
A few objectives that we would want to achieve while completing this report are included as
below:1)
To observe university students awareness regarding Computer and Internet Security and
Original and Licensed Software for these elements are ubiquitous nowadays.
2)
To observe university students knowledge regarding Computer and Internet Security and
Original and Licensed Software for these elements are ubiquitous nowadays.
3)
To see how respondents effort in protecting their information and property and take
safety measurements while they are on the Net.
4)
To see respondents views on computer ethics including copyright law and software
piracy.

4.0 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

4.1 PARTICIPANTS
The participants involved in this survey consists of 41 students from different background.
Majority of them are UKM students taking TESL and Special Education.

4.2 DATA COLLECTION METHOD

With the help of Google Forms, we had created an online survey consisting of 19 questions to
measure the students awareness of original and licensed software and internet and computer
security. Figure 1. shows the example of our questionnaire that we used.

Figure 1.

4.3 DATA ANALYSIS

Q1
Based on thorough observation that have been made, the results show that majority of computer
users with the ratio of 3 : 1 set passwords on their computers for security measures. With these
results, we can conclude that these respondents are highly aware of passwords set up as a part of
safety precautions for their computers.

Q2
Based on this question that has been proposed, the top chart reason why people use passwords on
their computer is to ensure privacy. With 16 respondents agreeing to the second statement, we
can see that they set their passwords as a reason to avoid hackers. As for the statement everyone
says it is safer that way and because the online websites require me to set up a password
statement received 2 respondents respectively. For this question, we can postulate that these
respondents are aware of not wanting unauthorized access to their computers that contain
information about them and that is why passwords function as barriers to avoid people from
intruding their personal data. Plus, they also treasure their privacy and which relates to other
three primary issues which are accuracy, property and access.
Q3
For this question that asked about their antivirus program, 39 respondents chose yes by which
95% of the respondents have install any antivirus program in their computers, and there is only
one respondent that does not have any antivirus program installed.
Q4
According to the results obtained, the most used antivirus program is Kaspersky with the number
of 13 users (32%). The least preferred is Norton (5%).
Q5
For first multiple choice questions, majority of the respondents (54%) always update their
computer and softwares in their laptops.
Q6
21 out of 41 respondents seldomly did backups for their files in the computer, and there is only
one person who has never use file backup.
Q7
23 out of 41 respondents were uncomfortable to reply messages from strangers on social
websites and two of them were comfortable to do so.
Q8
14 respondents half agreedly aware that social media are the main platforms to spread virus,
spam etc but there is one respondents disagree of the fact.
Q9
Most of the respondents, 19 out of 41 (46%) would take immediate action if there are reports on
threats such as virus on their computer but one of them refuse to take immediate action.

Q10
15 out of 41 respondents agree that they were responsible enough to use complicated passwords
and not sharing it with others and 15 of it were being indifferent to the fact. Two of them totally
disagree of the fact that they were responsible enough and two of them disagree.
Q11
13 out of 41 respondents were indifferent to the fact that they often use incognito mode while
browsing the internet and three of them totally agree to the fact.
Q12
15 of the respondents only use their computer for assignments, watching movies and
downloading purposes on internet and five of them disagree.
Q13
16 of the respondents were being indifferent to the fact that they know and use all the softwares/
applications installed in their computer while three of them totally disagree that they were aware
of all the applications installed in their computer.
Q14
14 out of 41 respondents answered indifferently as they half agreedly say yes to download free
softwares from internet illegally. Two of them disagree though.
Q15
36 out of 41 respondents (88%) were aware that using pirated software is considered as crime
while the other were not aware of it.
Q16
34 out of 41 respondents agreed that their computer is original and licensed while the others
disagree.
Q17
25 out of 41 respondents seldom install softwares into their computer by themselves while the
others answered either never or always.
Q18
Most of the respondents, if they were to install new softwares, they would go to the shop as a
resolution while the others prefer to download it online or ask someone expert to install it for
them.
Q19

Out of 41 respondents, 31 of them have pirated softwares in their computer for the sole reason
that the original softwares costs too much.

5.0 FINDINGS
5.1 Demographic data
In the past, protecting your privacy and security was simpler. All you needed perhaps was a
paper shredder which enables you to destroy your documents. Back then, everything was not as
complicated as it seemed nonetheless some differences can be seen in todays era, for each and
every one of us is embarking our journey towards globalization. Everything is possible these
days thanks to the access of the Internet and sufficient knowledge of ours regarding technologies
particularly computers. Despite the fact that we are moving towards a better century, we are
oblivious that every minute there are thousands of malicious programs that are being spread
across the Internet.
It is a universal belief that we are all concerned with having a safe and secure environment to
live in and the same applies to our personal security. According to Timothy J. and Linda,
computer security or cybercrime specifically focuses on information, hardware, and software
protection from unauthorized use. Plus, cybercrimes can take various forms which includes the
creation of malicious programs, denial of service attacks, scams and also data manipulation.
Throughout the data collection, we are able to identify 3 primary privacy issues which is closely
related to accuracy, property and access.
6.0 DISCUSSION

7.0 CONCLUSION
Having original, licensed software and security software is very important as it helps you in
protecting your data and making sure that your computer is safe from any harm or malicious
program that may affect your computer and lagged it.
When you buy your computer or softwares, make sure there is proper documentation to make
sure that its originality. Install antivirus in both your browser and computer. This way, your data
will be secured.
As students, we should be aware of this. This is because having antivirus and using original
softwares will help protecting your data as students and at the same time will ensure that your

assignments will be send on time without any problem such as virus in your pendrive that may
delete all your files. You also have to make sure you have back up data in online storage or hard
disk.
