REFLECTION

CEIT 319
The reason why we chose the topic Tales & Legends is that we found it appealing and broad;
we could prepare a wide range of materials including interesting stories. The part on which we
spent most time was planning how to utilize media and require learners response. We believe
that students participation is one of the most vital parts of the lesson, thats why we put more
emphasis on this part.

Integrating the ASSURE Model

Analyze learners: For this phase we examined what the students knowledge was at the end of
the previous lesson from Talim ve Terbiye Kurumu. They were already familiar with the
present simple tense and some simple daily expressions. We decided to build on that knowledge
step by step.

State objectives: We stated high objectives for the students because if we believe in them, they
will achieve more. One of the aims was to enable students to gain fluency in forming sentences
in the simple past tense and produce meaningful utterances. The other aim was to acquaint them
with the most famous tales and legends, which will also expand their general culture.

Select and design materials: We arranged our materials in accordence with the topic using
diverse media in order to adress as much intelligences as possible. The content of the unit
enabled us to use a large variety of text materials, visuals, videos and audio tracks. We utilized
software such as Prezi, Powtoon, Popplet, Pictochart, Stupeflix, Survey Monkey.

Utilize media and materials: For this step we gave importance to utilizing media as clearly as
possible in order to facilitate students comprehension of the material. For the first lesson we
used presentations prepared with Prezi and Powtoon to introduce the topic and explain the past
simple tense respectively.

Require learner response: To integrate students into the learning process actively and
effectively, we chose to prepare discussions and cooperative learning activities.

Evaluation: Evaluation takes place constantly and disceretely to reduce anxiety and tension
during the lesson. At the end of the lesson, we made a survey which served as an assessment.

Methods and Techniques

We used eclectic approach and we tried to choose the most appropriate techniques from each of
the different conventional methods. These methods are :

In the first week, we started the lesson with a simple introduction to Tales & Legends. This
material was influenced by the direct method where the titles of the topics consist od the theme
of the lesson. In this method the themes are on focus rather than the grammar rules, or grammar
is taught inductively. Then we procede with a grammar presentation in which we use the
grammar translation method. For the end of the lesson, we engaged the students in a group
activity, for which we were influenced by the cooperative learning approach.
For the second week, we prepared a reading activity in which the students firstly read Little Red
Riding Hood in sequence. Secondly, they listened to the story and finally they answered to
some comprehension questions. This activity mostly followed the pattern of the grammar
translation method with some elements of the direct method (the video).

For the third week, we arranged a writing activity consisting of three parts: two creative writings
and one vocabulary completion. For this lesson we followed the community language learning
where students oppinion is important. Furthermore, we blended the lexical approach as well;
we made an activity where students can practice their speaking and expand their vocabulary
range.
